♥ Fried Green Tomatoes ♥

I was looking at my little LONE tomato plant and
I dreamed ALL NIGHT LONG about FRIED GREEN TOMATOES last night
and the first thing I did this morning was to pull up my post from last year about
THESE  DELICIOUS, MOUTH-WATERING TREATS....
NOW...the tomatoes in the above photo DID grow, got red and juicy and they were delicious.
THESE two, however, were on the vine when we left for vacation
and the vine looks pretty pitiful, soooo, we are having
FRIED GREEN TOMATOES
tonight with our dinner.
WOO HOO
From THIS POINT,  this is a
POST FROM THE PAST...
and a good one....I do love me some FRIED GREEN TOMATOES.

I had to come back and tell you all about the
FRIED GREEN TOMATOES we had the other night.

THEN....I PROMISE, no more green tomato posts...
or at least until I find some more GREEN TOMATOES. :))

I used as little Canola oil as I could, got my skillet fairly hot, turned them often and fried until nice and golden.....
I was so hungry for one, I tried eating it too fast and it was H.O.T. and burned my mouth....

and, dayum, they were GOOD.

I am using a dish of RANCH DRESSING here because my sweet friend, SHELIA,
from NOTE SONGS says that is the way her tiny mouth likes FRIED GREEN TOMATOES.
I am not a huge fan of Ranch (Mr. Sweet would marry it if he could)
so if YOU know of something else used for a
FRIED GREEN TOMATO dip, would you kindly let me know?
Maybe something with a little LOUISIANA HOT SAUCE in it ?

My tomatoes are already beginning to turn red....must hurry and make the others tomorrow.

The GREEN tomatoes are firm and slightly hard so they fry up nice and crisp.

The redness makes them much softer and, altho, they still taste heavenly, they are a little mushy when they have reddened and softened.

See the redness of that one slice...the breading has fallen off....and it is STILL going to be delicious.
Thus frying them while nice and green makes for a taste treat you won't forget.

I asked the veggie stock boy if he ever had GREEN tomatoes. He said, "O, yes, ma'am.....a lot of times, if you will look on the bottom of a display of bright red tomatoes, you will find a few green and partial green, waiting their turn to move to the top.....to ripen."
Sure 'nuff.....there they were, just waiting for me and my frying pan.
2 really green ones and a few partially greens.
He told me to put them in the fridge to slow down ripening....
what a smart fella he is. My grocery store should feel very proud to have him in their employ.
O, these are sooo YUMMY, people.

Ya'll...It's the little things in life like
 FRIED GREEN TOMATOES
that makes it all worth while. :))

I used ONION RING MIX to coat these luscious slices of tomatoes
and it was PERFECT. The best taste and so easy. Just a little of the mix and a little
water to make a nice paste and you are good to go.

I will use it again.....just as soon as I come across more GREEN tomatoes.

...you know.......if I ever get to go to THE WHISTLE STOP CAFE
and they still have FRIED GREEN TOMATOES on their menu,
I surely will order some.
HOWEVER, if they have BARBECUE on the menu,
I do believe
I WILL PASS....!! :>)

OOO, and I've been told by several SOUTHERN ladies that, Southern women don't SWEAT...
they GLISTEN......and here I thought they BLUSHED.
♥ ♥ ♥
Biting into one of these delicious slices
sure makes one feel lucky to be from
THE SOUTH. :))

I've got the batter all ready for some more of these treats...
BUT.....I've watched that movie 3 times in 3 days....
and I'm tired of it. :)
Oh, yeah......and MR. SWEET
suggested I just ADD Louisiana Hot Sauce to my Ranch Dressing for dipping the
tomatoes in....

DUH !!
perfect....:)
XOXOXO

I remember this yummy post! They sound great and since my one and only tomato plant is on it's way out, think I'll see if there are any green ones out there:@)

Wonder how tartar sauce would taste on them... I think I'd be tempted to go with ketchup and vinegar.

Yummy!! Almost pulled some green tomatoes tonight when we were restaking our plants but Mr. Greenjeans was watching so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to fry up some of that deliciousness. Think I'll watch the movie, again, too. Thanks for all your wonderful ideas!

Can you believe in south Carolina and still have not tried green tomatoes? I know I really need to! My mother always made fried tomatoes but with red, do they taste the same?

Hi Bj!

I remember this fun post from last year... make me want some more RIGHT now! That batter makes them delicious!

Maybe I am dumb... but I had to watch that move three times just to figure out who's story she was really telling.

I read your va-cay posts and glad you had so much fun with your family! I am feeling much better now that I have recovered from my little trip :/

Thanks for sharing at my party this week :)

I haven't seen that movie in ages! Perhaps I can get Amber to rent it from Net Flicks for me. It takes the length of a movie to prepare, change, feed and burp, swaddle and cuddle and put the babies back down. I could use a good movie - or two - or three!

You are the second blogger that I visit every day who has, today, posted on these treats. I HAVE to try them!

Well, I have been to the Whistle Stop Cafe, and they do indeed serve the most delicious fried green tomatoes ever.

And they do indeed serve what is called "Bennett's BBQ". I had that, too. It was delicious. I guess the secret's in the sauce...

I tried to healthy up fried green tomatoes last year and decided that sometimes it's just better to go with fried and worry about it later. Delicious post, BJ, and I love your vacation shots too.

Dear BJ, you can talk about friend green tomatoes all day long, and it will be fine with me. I love 'em.♥

I was going to tell you to put the hot sauce in the Ranch, but your fellow beat me to it. Me? I am a no sauce kind of girl. I like mine plain.

BJ,
Not a fan of fried green tomatoes...I prefer mine ripen on the vine!!! My former neighbor use to raid our tomatoe bushes in SouthEast Kansas all the time...which we didn't mind, as the harvest was bountiful!!! Enjoy, dear friend!!!

Pat

Great idea! I have never made these. I got to try the onion ring coating. If i made them, I would eat them with Sriracha sauce! You know the one with the rooster on it! Also, if that's a tad to spicy, mix it with some Mayo and yummy!
Blessings,
Susie
