My daughter, Stacy, gave me this really amazing wooden box
for MOTHER'S DAY.
I have never seen one like it before, in my entire life.
I did a little research on it and was truly amazed at what this box was used for.
Isn't she a BEAUT !!!
O....I am sooo smitten with her.
In early 1891, Dr. Thomas M. Rotch of Boston, MA determined that infant deaths could be greatly reduced by careful prescription feeding.
He met with Mr. Gustavus A. Gordon, a scientist, and they came up with modified cow's milk in an effort to change a cow's milk to closer resemble human mother's milk.
Mr. George H. Walker, a Boston businessman, was interested in the project and was the one who supplied the financing. The first laboratory opened in Boston on December 1, 1891.

All the hinges, locks and the handle are made of very heavy metal.
It is just full of personality and charm....
not to mention the AGE of this treasure.

There were several laboratories located across the country.

The complete inside is lined with a galvanized metal...
much like what the olden ICE BOXES were lined with.
This metal kept the contents cold when ice was added.

This lid removes, and the milk was placed inside the metal "box",
then ice was poured all around it....hence the writing on the inside top lid....
In 1929 the Borden Co. purchased Walker-Gordon.
I have a feeling these men and women that worked so hard to change the milk of cows
to closer resemble human mothers milk,
never, in their wildest dreams,
...thought that someday, their awesome and oh, so interesting wooden boxes
would be used and treasured for home decor.

WOW what a treasure that is!!! I'll have to keep watch for one. NOT that it would be EASY to find. I am also looking for a few of our "Old Milk Boxes"...We all had them on our porches and the milk man delivered our milk in them... THAT is where we always kept an extra key to our door or a note to someone. "It's Under the MILK BOX",hehe!!! I certainly "WISH" I had our own BUT I will be happy with a local one!
