THE FIVE AND DIME REMEMBERED ~~

After reading about the FIVE AND DIME in my new VICTORIA Magazine (slober, drool) I decided to share with you some of the pieces my mother bought from F.W. WOOLWORTH in Dallas, Tex..back in the 40's and 50's. It was a favorite place of hers to shop, things were fairly inexpensive and the store was so much fun to go in.

I can remember angels with angel hair, glass balls, the bubbly, different colored lights, tinsel, icicles that my mother wanted my brother and I to place, one at a time, on the tree and, when she wasn't looking, we'd throw a handful at a time on.

When I was in high school, I worked in a 5 & Dime.....in the toy department. Looking back, it was so much fun. While I was doing it, I was just "passing time".....(and now I WANT IT BACK!)

This cream and sugar set is soooo one of my favorites. I don't even use them other than for display....too afraid I'll drop one on this tile. Most things, old or new, I use but...not these!

I couldn't capture the true pink of this depression glass cake plate that came from Woolworth. It has such a pretty design on it and I use it every chance I get!

The FIVE AND DIMES had more than just toys and Christmas decorations. They had lovely pieces of glass and many other things. Many of these have now become heirlooms and I'm so glad I have these pieces from so long ago; especially because my mother loved them. I love the pretty vase and the heart shaped candy dish. I have some more things from the FIVE AND DIME that I want to share with you but those are for another posting...another day.

Jean, As I was driving to work this morning I was hoping you had added to your blog !! We used to go to a Five and Dime in Rotan. It had a wooden floor that squeked as we "looked around".

I loved seeing that article in Victoria. When I was little I used to take the bus downtown with my grandmother. The Woolworth store had a counter where we would eat lunch. I have such fond memories of eating hamburgers and french fries while sitting on those barstools that were attached to the tile counter. Now, just down the street, the old Woolworth sign hangs in a trendy restaurant above their bar. The memories just flooded back to me when I saw that sign.

Hi BJ!! Thank you, thank you for taking time from your busy day to visit my blog and leaving a comment. Why sure! You can add me to your list - I feel honored!

I love your blog and what a cute header you have there! Your post brought back memories of the 5 and Dimes. My mom shopped there, too and I loved looking at all of the bobbles, even as a kid. Guess that is why I have a fetish for anything vintage or antique.

I'm adding you to my list, if that is okie dokie with you!

Becky

Thanks for the memories. We had a dime store here called M.E.Moses and the floors squeaked. Until a couple of weeks ago that building housed a Dollar General. I went in there a lot and the floors were still the same after all these years. As a young girl, I used to buy Blue Waltz cologne in there. A few years ago I found a dime store in Fredricksbug, Tx that still carried it. I can open it up and smell it and it instantly takes me back.

Hello! First I want to thank you for visiting my blog.

We have many likes in common. Aren't flea markets and yard sales the best? The items you have displayed that were purchased at Woolworth's are lovely. And, isn't it wonderful that they used to carry beautiful linens stamped for embroidery? You certainly have some priceless treasures.

Keep watching because later this week I will post my Apple Pie recipe on my blog for you!

Hi Jean,
Thank you for popping in and your lovely comments.
I remember 'Woolies' as we called it. It had dark wood floors and counters, so much nicer that how they are now.

thanks for looking at my blog. I remember shopping there for my Christmas gifts. For ten cents I could get my Mother the hairnets she wore. I also remember the bottlebrush trees.

I remember riding the bus "downtown" to go to the movies and stoping at Woolworth's to buy the latest records. After, we would have a big coke at the counter. Boy, did our money go far back then.

You are so lucky! When I was little, I wanted to work at the five and dime - I remember telling my Dad I was going to work there and live at home until I was at least 35! Needless to say, neither one of those aspirations came true.. thanks for the walk down my memory lane.

Thanks for visiting my blog. I just adore all your pieces. My Mom used to buy a lot of her glassware at Woolworths too. I may have to see what has happened to it all.

Hey BJ, we had a Woolworth store with squeaky floors too, lol, I remember they had "all the lemonade you can drink" for 25 cents or something, so my cousin and I would drink lemonade till they finally kicked us out, lol. You have some lovely glassware!

bj, Glad you were able to add my ribbon "For Amy" to your side bar.
Amy called me yesterday and she sounded great! I think she is finally on the up swing from her chemo treatments. Thank God..
Oh I remember the Woolworth store
in the 50s & 60s.. With the wood floors and all the bins filled with fun things. It was my favorite place to go as a child.
I loved the atricle in Victoria magazine.
Have a lovely day!~Mary~:-}

I remember those!!! Once a month I'd go to town with my grandmother for supplies and she would take me to Woolsworth and get me one of those fabulous banana splits at the counter...and we had a Ben Franklin store...I'd go there and buy little what-nots!! lol Boy a dollar went a long way back then! One year mama bought a 6ft Christmas tree and the lights and the ornaments to go on it at the Dime store for $10!!! lol Oh what a sweet time in life.
