NATIONAL PIE DAY.......YAY !!

I just LOVE
NATIONAL PIE DAY
because of ALL desserts on the planet,
PIE  IS  MY  FAVORITE.

and
CHERRY PIE
is just about my very favorite.

A regular pie
or

these little POCKET PIES.

When I make a fruit pie, I never, EVER use the
CANNED PIE FILLING....
For my cherry pies, I use the OREGON TART CHERRIES
and the BEST recipe is on the inside of the label.

BEST CHERRY PIE
1/2 - 3/4 cup  SUGAR
3 tablespoons CORNSTARCH
2 cans Oregon Red Tart CHERRIES
1/4 teaspoon ALMOND EXTRACT (optional but I ALWAYS add it)
1 tablespoon butter
2 crusts for a 9 inch pie.
****
Preheat 400 degree oven.
Drain cherries and reserve the juice from ONLY ONE CAN.
In a saucepan, stir the cherry juice into the combined mixture of the cornstarch and sugar.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat. Gently stir in cherries and almond extract. Pour filling into pasty lined pie pan. Dot with butter. Adjust crust, seal and vent.
Bake 30 to 40 minutes or until crust is nicely browned and cherry juice is bubbly.

Let pie cool before cutting to give the juice time to thicken up.

I use my little BLUEBIRD of HAPPINESS vent but you can just slit in several places on crust or cut a small hole in the center for venting....

I get so tickled when I make a photo like this 'cause it looks like a
REAL baby bird waiting for his mama to feed him. :)

Cute fruit or veggie cans can make the cutest containers for flowers or plants...

.....and, remember, if you don't have the time to MAKE a pie to eat and share with family and friends,
BAKERIES or GROCERY STORES
have delicious pies that would be fabulous with

a scoop of COFFEE  ICE CREAM....
or MEXICAN PRALINE....
OR you can do as I do and have a
SCOOP OF EACH.....ummmmm

I don't know about YOU but I am thrilled to death that there's such a thing as a DELICIOUS
NATIONAL PIE DAY......

Hi bj, I love those tart cherries too, when I make mine I use one can of those and one can of cherry pie filling...wowo what a wonderful mixture, the cherries are different colors and each has something to bring to the pie...tart and sweet, and looks sensational...Love your birdie, so vintage so so sweet...phyllis

I am a toss up between cherry and apple pie. Either way, what a great thing to celebrate!

Happy Belated Birthday, BJ!
I do not use canned pie filling either, and that is a great idea for cherry pie!

Yum, yum, yum! As if the pie doesn't look good enough, you used the cans in the cutest way!

I never knew about National Pie Day until I heard it from you! lol I use those same cherries and that same recipe. However, as much as I LOVE my coffee I do not like coffee flavored ice cream- weird but true....so I would have my own with a bit of vanilla bean ice cream, please....IF I were eating pie, that is!;>)

Hope you have a great night- xo Diana

Me too on loving cherry pies...I found this brand of cherries on sale at Wal-mart several weeks ago for 25 cents per can...can you believe that low price...cans not dented and still had a long shelf life. I bought 15 cans...also they had blueberries for 25 cents per can...they only had 6 and I bought all 6. I do love bargains like that. Enjoy your pie!

Love your little pie bird. Wonder what kind of pie I could make for National Pie Day...a very small one that's for sure...I'm thinking.

I love and enjoy all pies. No doubt you are the best and happiest cook around. I quit buying Blue Bell as I was eating too much. Now I just go and get me a "dip" now and then. I have just go to find a way to get your leftovers, should there be any.

I haven't had cherry pie in forever! Gonna keep my eyes open for a sale on cherries and I will be back to this post when I make the pie. Happy Pie Day BJ-enjoy:@)

Now I've gotta make me a cherry pie! Thanks for the tip on using those cherries. I buy my cherry pies at the farmers market in the summer, and she mixes three types of cherries in every pie, and it is heavenly!

Finally, a holiday I can actually get my teeth into! Pie is my favorite dessert, too. Any kind of pie, every kind of pie. I have never decided which kind is my favorite, I guess it is whatever kind I am eating at the moment. That sounds like a great recipe, and I love your little pie bird.

Cherry pie is one of our favorite pies, so is lemon, chocolate, pecan, pumpkin, coconut. I guess by now you know I am a pie eater. ~smile~ I am also happy to know there is a National Pie Day, If I wasn't battling a very bad cold today, I might would have joined, thanks for sharing, and like you I don't use pie fillings, there is nothing like the real deal.
Blessings,
Sue

I actually can't imagine anyone not liking pie... Dark Chocolate Cream pie is my favorite, with Custard and or Chess/Lemon Chess next in line. But I also like a home-made apple pie with cheddar cheese on top... and DH's favorite is Coconut Cream.

Happy Pie Day!

National Pie Day, huh? Well, that certainly gives me a good excuse!!! Your recipe sounds really good, and most importantly... easy! I'd have to have Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla with the pie, but I'm going to look for the Mexican Praline! Anything to do with pralines is fabulous!

BJ,
YuMMy!!!
Cherry pie was my late neighbor's favorite!!! I baked him a Cherry Pie several times during the year while he was still living! Now, as for me, dear friend...I prefer soft pies! But since it's Pie Day...I guess what type doesn't matter. EnJOY your Cherry Pie, dear friend!!!
Fondly,
Pat

My son is the pie maker around here and he made a homemade apple pie. The cherry sounds good too.

I would love a gluten free pie crust. My favorite used to be cherry. My grandmother used to make a cracker pie and it was so yummy. Have you ever heard of that?

DeLISH! My fave is pumpkin pie, but cherry is right up at the top too. Tho, I have to confess, gasp....I'm currently hooked on Chocolate fudge brownie frozen yogurt. A bit healthier for me. :) BUT when I eat out, once in a while, I do get to indulge in pie and during the non-harvest season, cherry is definitely top of my list. :) Thanks for a delightful and delicious visit.

What!? I missed pie day!? Oh for the love of Pete. Why isn't that on my calendar?
I love apple/berry pie. Or just plain apple, or lemon meringue, and blueberry, and strawberry rhubarb, have you ever had that?
Maybe pecan? Peanut butter? Cherry of course....oh, I just can't choose. Have a bite for me sweet BJ:>P

Hi bj! I made cherry pie for my post too!!! I must say, though, yours looks much much better! I wanted to put the almond extract in mine but somehow it had disappeared from the pantry, probably used up at Christmas time and not replaced. Your little birdie is a tweetie sweetie! Linda

Cherry is the favorite pie for Mr.Z ... not me so much. Your pie looks so good and makes me want to bake one. Most of the time, I take the easy way out and use the frozen ones.

I've been trying to eat healthier and while I haven't cut out sweets all together (I couldn't possibly), I have cut them down to just little bits a day. So...I could actually eat your entire pie!! A nice cup of coffee, a little ice cream and a whole cherry pie...yup! Sounds perfect!

I missed pie day, but I did make my honey a homemade pizza pie!! I sure would love a slice of your wonderful looking cherry pie. I don't even need ice cream on top.
