My sweet blogging friend that lives
with a infamous pig named EARL
over at HAPPIER THAN A PIG IN MUD
is one of the better cooks.
She made a LIGHT OAT BREAD that sounded so good, I had to try it.
I am a HORRIBLE bread maker..never have very much luck with making HOMEMADE bread.
so I decided to make mine into rolls, which we love.
Got out my YEAST which was a little past expiration date..not much....but some.
I love that the company is supporting breast cancer research by having a
BAKE FOR THE CURE. ♥
OK...then I wondered if I could use this amazing IRISH OATMEAL ♥
for my bread....?....decided I was too much of a titty baby to try something new
so I went with the regular OLD FASHION rolled oats.
Isn't that metal can just amazing, tho...I will be adding THIS CAN to my pile of CANS and BOTTLES
so that I can be a smash hit on HOARDERS tv. program.....
Daughter, STACY, brought this can of STEEL CUT oats to me from one of her trips.
Thanks, Stacy Leigh...♥
I WISH I had a bread machine...but....alas...I do not.
So it was all done by hand....
I LUV my dough beaters that came with my hand-held BLACK AND DECKER mixer.
Coolest mixer I've ever had. Love it...
My mother used to make the best breads, rolls, cakes, pies...baking was her strong suite. She was a fabulous cook of all things but she really excelled at BAKING.She, of course, didn't have a bread machine, either. Her old wooden spoons were worn smooth on the sides from all the stirring, folding, whipping that she did with them.
Where ARE THOSE SPOONS? Maybe my brother has them....
I guess my yeast WASN'T alright to use because my rolls did not rise up high and mountainous.
They had the BEST yeast flavor...but I admit before the world that they were NOT light and flaky.
...just keepin' it real.....
...can you see the oatmeal scattered throughout..?
OK, covering them up so they will stay warm a little longer...
Mr. Sweet hasn't come back from work-out yet and when he does....
he's going to love these LIGHT Oat rolls..
since the recipe uses HONEY instead of SUGAR...makes for a more healthy bread.
Next time, I will use half white and half whole wheat flower flour...
Well, like I said, I covered them up...but not before taking a couple out to...
TRY THEM OUT...
...to see if they tasted good...
....and THEY DID...
Thanks, LYNN, for the good recipe. I'll be making these again but next time will be sure
to have FRESHER yeast..:>)

It's not just for CAKES anymore...
Oh they even look good. Thanks for being honest about the freshness of the yeast. I think that should be a lesson to us all. I love what you've done with your mama's beautiful cake plate. It is an autumnal delight.
ReplyDeleteThe rolls look delicious. I've used out of date yeast too so I know exactly what you mean. I'm sure they tasted great! I didn't get the gene to make homemade bread, mine has to come from the Bakery.......

These look very good bj and adding that lovely jam just makes it looks so, so good! I see you like Cain..me too, and Romney! ;D
ReplyDeleteDelicious. . .I can almost smell them! You've inspired me to bake bread.
ReplyDeleteSmiles,
Carol
They smell ...er... look great!! It is almost time for me to start making bread again. Love to do it when the weather gets cold & the snow starts to fly!!
ReplyDeleteMarilyn
Oh...they look good...I laughed...a smash hit on hoarders....there really ought to be a bumper sticker!! It would be a great seller. All us tablescapers would definately fit the profile!! My husband loves to call that show, come over and clean my house because I am too lazy to do it myself!!
ReplyDeleteYou are the real deal!! I have used yeast past the expiration date a few times and it has been okay, so it's the luck of the draw, I guess! They do look delicious though! I'll be making some bread soon I hope. once my kitchen is redone. {Maybe not so soon!!}
ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
Well, they certainly look good! Delicious in fact. :)
ReplyDeleteHey sweet lady...I left you a message in Face Book...and the side bar I mentioned there is on my blog. ;D
ReplyDeleteYou can cook rolls with expired yeast for me anytime. They look so delicious. Put my nose up to the screen to see if I could smell them...they looked so good.
ReplyDeleteYour rolls look good especially with that butter and jelly. I love the aroma of bread or rolls baking in the oven. By the way, to test yeast to determine if it is active, put a Tblsp. of yeast and 1tsp. sugar in 1cup warm (not too warm) water. Stir and let it stand 5min. If the mixture bubbles, the yeast is good. Hope that helps.------- Shannon
ReplyDeleteYum! Those look delicious. I've never been too good at making homemade buttermilk biscuits, but maybe I could give these a try.
ReplyDeleteGirl...you know I gain weight every time I stop by here...just looking at all the things you make, has caused me to gain at least 10 pounds...Always looks GOOD
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Shug
Even imperfect home made bread beats commercial breads hands down! Don't you love the smell as it comes out of the oven? They certainly look good enough to eat:>)
ReplyDeleteIt's all your fault I am gaining weight, truly it is!!! I just can't help myself, if you say it is GOOD, then I have to try it ...
ReplyDeleteNow don't tell me you made the jam also!?
Have a great week ~
TTFN ~
Hugs,
Marydon
The rolls look good BJ! Sorry to hear they didn't rise enough for you, maybe they needed a little more time for each rise. Hope they work out better next time:@)
ReplyDeleteI love homemade bread. Especially rolls. I use to make wheat loaves when my kids were young. They say they want me to make it again when I get there.
ReplyDeleteBrenda
They look very good. I am scared of yeast but do bake otherwise. Joe and I eat steel cut oatmeal all the time. It takes a long time to cook but that's what makes it healthy is what I tell myself. I have rolled you onto my blog roll so I can better keep up with you! hugs♥O
ReplyDeleteBJ those look super yummy! Thanx for coming to the party! Hope to see you again next week! Have a wonderful evening.
ReplyDeletethese look delicious! we have made the steel cut oatmeal overnight in the crock pot, it is yummy with apples, brown sugar and cinnamon!
ReplyDeleteThey look mighty good to me. I bet they were delicious and I applaud you being brave and giving it a try.
ReplyDeleteThey look amazing! I bet your home smelled wonderful while they were baking!
ReplyDeleteHi BJ, My mom and grandma always made the best yeast rolls but unfortunately the bread gene skipped me. Yours look wonderful and I know they were so much better than store bought. I have my moms vintage cake plate too and it's mostly used for decorating.
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining the Open House party.
Hugs,
Sherry
Oh, you read my mind! I was wondering if I could use those oats too. They are amazing! I love the can too. I use it to put utensils in. Your rolls look wonderful! I saw this on Lynn's blog and it looked so yummy! Great job!
ReplyDeleteI love anything oatmeal, but I keep getting sidetracked by Herman Cain!!! Herman Cain for President!!!
ReplyDelete9-9-9, baby!!! I want a 9-9-9 t-shirt, dadgummit! ;P
Nothing in the world like fresh homemade bread. I used to bake it daily when my kids were little and gathered round my feet. Hot butter and homemade strawberry jam...
ReplyDeleteYour break looks wonderful even if it didn't rise as much as you'd like. I think oatmeal bread is always a bit denser anyway! xo Diana
flower - flour?
ReplyDeleteYou're too funny and a GREAT cook.
Does Mr. Sweet know how good he has it?
They look delicious!
ReplyDeleteDarn it. Now, I'm off on a carb craving!
....and this was the day that I swore I'd go off carbs! My mum used to make the best oatmeal bread - we called it porridge bread and ate it warm with butter and molasses.
ReplyDeleteYou have some serious comfort food here. Looks yummy.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! :) I will definitely try this!
ReplyDeletewhen my kids come home for a visit, they throw out my "out of date" stuff. Cracks them up! Your oat rolls look fabulous and that butter reminds me to run up to the Mennonite store to get some of their "real" butter for the holidays....yum! Good to see you BJ. Always great posts over here. xoxo
ReplyDeleteGood morning bj, I do have a breadmaker and I too love the oatmeal bread recipe as well. It is delicious and your rolls look delicious. Kudos to you for making them the old fashioned way. You are the best cook and baker!!!
ReplyDeleteHave fun eating the rolls.
Love, Jeanne
HI BJness! Your rolls look really good especially all slithered with buttah! That Lynn is a great cook, isn't she? I've tried a few of her recipes! :)
ReplyDeleteNow look at your pretty fallen header! You are definitively the Queen of Headers! :)
I know, I'm a partying one. But with all the work into that afghan - I was going to milk it for all it's worth! :)
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
BJ....wowser,bread is another weakness, right next to chocolate,Lynn has cooked some lovely muffins I love her and Earl, and I love this recipe,it looks delish.I can almost smell the wonderful goodness.
ReplyDeleteHave a gr8 weekend.
~JO
I love those steel cut oats, we have had them many times. I don't think they would have worked in your recipe.
ReplyDeleteYeast is one of those rare items that really does crash and burn when it is past the date. I have used past date a couple of times by accident and it didn't work well. I've never put my rolls in muffin tins to bake...what a good idea!
You did fantastic! You never know about bread and how it willl turn out. This morning I made an oatmeal bread that was a disaster; we are still going to eat it but....I won't be showing any photos of it. I tell myself it is because of the weather.
ReplyDeleteRita
Hi BJ,
ReplyDeleteI just love Steel Cut Oats. I really like that you made the recipe into rolls, we like rolls. There is nothing like a hot roll with butter and jam. Hope you are having a great day and thank you so much for sharing with Full Plate Thursday.
