I started thrifting as a teenager.
My mother loved going to garage sales better than anything and
she took me to a lot of them.
She bought a vintage bedroom suite for me when I was about
15 yrs. old...
the dresser had a huge round mirror....the bed was a poster bed.
Gosh I wish I had it back...
seems from that day on,
I LOVE THRIFTING.

I LOVE THRIFTING.
A lot of the furniture in my cottage is thrifted and most of it
has been re-done to fit *my style*.....
It seems DISHES are my one true love, tho.
I now have THREE sets of BLUE AND WHITE dishes and am
ready to find a knock-out set in RED.
OOO....my little grand, DEEDS, is selling this great chocolate
and , of course, I had to buy a *few*.....:))
THIS red hutch is actually a harvest table Mr. Sweet and I bought over 50 years ago.
It is maple and was natural color for all those years..
THEN...
when I saw a photo in a magazine of a WELSH hutch,
I decided I could use my harvest table and
I decided I could use my harvest table and
Mr. Sweet made the hutch top for me...
I painted it all the very best RED
and it's lived happily ever after......:))
Here it is with ONE side lifted up..
It comes in handy when we have a lot of desserts at holidays
and I can just put them all on this table.
The hutch top isn't attached to the table so, in a pinch...
I COULD move the whole table *out* , raise both sides and seat 8 more people.
I LOVE furniture that can do double duty, don't you?
I LOVE furniture that can do double duty, don't you?
Maybe one reason I have three sets of blue and white dishes
is because they look goooood on the RED...:)
I also like the little touches of black added in with the blues...
someone said once that
*every room should have a touch of black*.
I can never leave you without showing
SOME kind of food we have at SWEET NOTHINGS...
UMMM..we really love this BLACK CHERRY.
....with BISCUITS.....
OF COURSE ! :)
...and have you noticed,
anything tastes better when it's served on a pretty dish?
I have !
HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS....
I believe it !!

Ooooooh BJ I love that hutch so very much!!! Cute, cute cute! Love those dainty blue patterned plates too!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Dena
A little touch of black and a little touch of red sure looks great. Have you ever had to have the extra "at table" space? That really is a nice feature.
ReplyDelete(That chocolate nearly killed me one year. The school was doing a fundraiser and I bought it all the time from this student or that one. Zero willpower I have for a sweet child selling chocolate and especially that chocolate, which is very good.)
Hi BJ!
ReplyDeleteI love your hutch for its beauty as well as its versatility.
Your biscuits look so fluffy and delicious.
Have a wonderful week! La

ReplyDeleteBJ your hutch is so pretty! I love your blue and white china! I have some touches of black in my kitchen!
ReplyDeletewhat a wonderful marriage of the two peices looks beautiful and that color is amazing,, your story of how you became a thrifting fan is so sweet. What wonderful things we learn from our mama's
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, our house is small so anytime furniture can do double duty I'm all for it. That red is wonderful. It looks like the same red of my kitchen cabinets. It all looks so pretty.
ReplyDeleteLove your hutch...it's no wonder you have kept Mr. Sweet for over 50 years! Those blue and white plates look so nice against the red.
ReplyDeleteWhat charming dishes. I can so undertand why they had to follow you home. I love them on the hutch. What an amazing transformation - with the help of a very talented husband!
ReplyDelete- The Tablescaper
I sure wish we had 'thrifty' places to shop & decent yard sales here. Your dishes are gorgeous, BJ. Your harvest table cabinet I love.

The best part of thrifting, it is now the green thing to do and you don't have to spend a ton, like you would at the Mall!
ReplyDeleteYou have some pretty collection of dishes. I wish I had a spacious kitchen as I love those small little things that give you joys in life.
ReplyDeleteJust love your blog. You remind us to count our blessings, and not always wish for things out of our budget. Your thrifty finds are so warm and welcoming. A "million bucks" couldn't make a house a home any more than your sweet thift store treasures!
ReplyDeleteLove those pretty blue and while dishes. What a great idea with the table. Love the color.
ReplyDeleteAs usual, your photos are always so yummy.
BJ,
ReplyDeleteI adore how you "married" the hutch top "Mr. Sweet" made for you with the drop~leaf table. Sweet, indeed! Your dishes are just precious. Gargage $ales are going strong every weekend in our little town...perhaps now that things have slowed back to a regular rats pace...I can take in a few.HA!
I checked out some scrumptious looking jellies from France at our local market yesterday. At nealy $5a jar...I think I'll stick with Mr. Smuckers! Drop by on Monday and see what I did to my cupboard door!!!
Fondly,
Pat
P.S. Speaking to my JOY Circle Sisters on Tuesday evening about Encouragement. . .I covet your prayers!
I love thrifting too just like you, most of my home had been thrifted and redone/repurposed :)
ReplyDeleteYour hutch is just beautiful ~ so warm and inviting!
I had to comment when I saw that your grands were selling that candy. It brought back lots of memories of helping my children sell the chocolate and buying quite a few bars for myself. LOL Kit
ReplyDeleteYour hutch is great and I love the blue and white dishes. Your biscuits and cherry jam looks delish. And I would always buy those chocolate bars! I thought I was following you already, but I am now! xo,
ReplyDeleteFound the beautiful "wedding dress post" you told me about - how sweet of your son-in-law! I'm definitely planning on keeping my dress ;-). My 5 year-old is already in love with it - we'll see ;-). Have a wonderful day - maks :-)
ReplyDeleteI never caught the *thrifting bug,* but LUV what you do with it.
ReplyDeleteAnd I simply LUV, LUV, LUV that red hutch!!! :-)

I really love the red hutch, your dishes look very nice in it. The biscuits and jam look very inviting. Have a blessed evening.
ReplyDeleteI "LOVE" your hutch&harvest table. With all your black&white it's a knockout! I've always lived with the love of the "Hunt too", and it started with my Mom too! We used to call it "Let's go Tag-Sailing"! LOVED it! and believe it or not I actually bought a cream picture I LOVED when I was in 4th grade(and I still have it).Yes, I've always been in LOVE with dishes too. Your Blue and white dishes are WONDERFUL.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week,
Hugs,
Donna
I have always loved your beautiful red hutch that Mr. Sweet made for you. What a "sweet" and talented guy, he's a keeper!
ReplyDeleteThe china we have in common looks about eight kinds of awesome in that red hutch. You two are so smart to build it and paint it. We are swimming in concrete urns here. I was just fortunate to get mine for six dollars and not twenty five dollars which what it usually runs at a store. ♥O
ReplyDeleteBJ, you know I'm smiling just looking at these photos of your red hutch and those blue and white dishes. Beautiful! ~ Sarah
ReplyDeleteOk. I want to line up all that delicious food on the wonderful and terrific hutch and eat it off the blue and white dishes. Wow.
ReplyDeleteI agree...thrifting is so much fun and affordable. There's hardly a reason to pay retail. And the hunt is 99% of it! ha.
ReplyDeleteYour posts are always so nourishing to the soul!
ReplyDeleteBJ, I am with you. I love thrifting. Hunting for great tresures. I think I inheritied the desire to go "junk hunting". I have always loved it. Hey, that hutch is to die for. Wow! Mr. Sweets did a great job. and you are the lucky one! Also beautiful plates. You always have such cute things. Thanks for sharing your beauty. Hugs, Karie
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures BJ. My family don't "get" my thrifting needs ;(. maybe we can go together one day if you visit in sunny Australia?

BJ, that was brilliant combining the table with the hutch...love how it looks and how versatile it is! I went garage sailing with someone recently. It was fun! Your childhood bedroom suite sounded wonderful, as did your sweet mom who bought it for you. :)
ReplyDeleteBJ I love how you said 'thrifting feeds my soul' because I feel that way also! Its wonderful to find lovely and useful things at bargain prices and save stuff from the landfills! You know I'm a dishaholic also...it's wonderful fun! hugs
ReplyDeleteLinda
Anybody can but new things, like the buffet. Ti have the hutch made by hand and added to the classy base is great, thoughtful and lovely. The changes by season of the dishes gives the home nice style. Those biscuits are divine, the butter and flower so accommodating to a nice jam, and any fruit will do. Pair those with a strong java, and the perfect breakfast just showed up!
ReplyDeleteI love that hutch BJ! Such fun things too! Those biscuits looked delish!
ReplyDeleteYour red hutch would look perfect in my red and green sunroom. All of your plates are so pretty. Love that old red.
