The Winchester Mystery House is a well-known California mansion that was under construction continuously for 38 years, and is reported to be HAUNTED.

It once was the personal residence of Sarah Winchester, the widow of gun magnate William Wirt Winchester, but is now a tourist attraction. Under Winchester's day-to-day guidance, its "from-the-ground-up" construction proceeded around-the-clock, without interruption, from 1884 until her death on September 5, 1922, at which time work immediately ceased.[2] The cost for such constant building has been estimated at about US $5.5 million[3] (if paid in 1922, this would be equivalent to almost $70 million in 2008 dollars).[4]
The mansion is renowned for its size and utter lack of any master building plan. According to popular belief, Winchester thought the house was haunted by the ghosts of individuals killed by Winchester rifles, and that only continuous construction would appease them. It is located at 525 South Winchester Blvd. in San Jose, California.

My AUNT LILLIAN lived in SAN JOSE, CA. in the 50'sand I spent 2 weeks with her one summer.
She took me to see this MYSTERY MANSION
and it is without a doubt, like nothing I had ever seen before or since.
The STRANGEST house on the planet....and so so interesting...
**
**
roamed throughout the entire mansion.... and that MRS. WINCHESTER thought that the only way to keep them from haunting her was to have continous building to her house. Never mind that most of it made no sense whatsoever !

This is one of the rooms that I remember so well...the ball room..... it's a BEAUTIFUL room but I was so busy looking around, hoping to see a ghost, that I barely saw the room !!

there were doors that lead to NOWHERE...
there's TALL doors....and SHORT doors...
doors that were useless....

I remember opening one door that had a solid brick wall behind it....strange, indeed...
it kinda made the hair on the back of my neck stand up !!

If you haven’t found enough spooky things to do in Sacramento, one of the most famous haunted houses in the U.S. is only a couple hours drive. The Winchester Mansion is located at 525 S. Winchester Blvd, San Jose, CA

So if you are looking for some ghostly fun ,they are having flashlight tours on Friday, October 31, Halloween night. The tours of the 160 room mansion are conducted with only moonlight and the flashlight each person will receive at the beginning of the tour. Tickets are $43 and you can buy them online; it is probably a good idea to do that before you make the drive because I hear they sometimes sell out on spooky occasions like this.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN to all ......and to all a GOOD NIGHT !!

Oh BJ!
How fun was this tour. Happy Pink Saturday sweetie, and thanks so much for sharing. I so love this mansion. I would love to tour it. Love the pinks throughout your post tonight.
Happy Halloween sweetie. Country hugs and love, Sherry
I've always been fascinated with this house too. My Grandmother had a brochure book from when she visited in the 80's and i have it now. My sister went a few years ago too and really enjoyed it. What a fascinating woman Mrs. Winchester must have been...or just plain weird! Happy Pink and Happy Halloween!
what a cool house very spooky have a fab pink halloween
How sad, it sounds like all that money wasn't worth the guilt the Winchesters felt about their product. I have always been fascinated with the house though. It is so huge! I wonder how long it would take to go through the whole thing. DO you suppose there are rooms you can't even get to?
Great post :)
You know how I am about ghosts and haunted places.. lol
Happy Halloween - and have a great weekend!
BJ...YOU are always a treat! Happy Hauntings to you and yours!
Spooky, gorgeous, massive pink roof house! I guess with a house that size... stairs just can't always lead to somewhere:) Cute little short door, looks fit for a playhouse:) Happy Halloween, My Friend. See ya soon:)
Woo-hoo! What a beautiful mansion for ghosts to haunt! Love the pictures and the tales! Happy Pink Saturday and Halloween! Have fun! Hugs, Coralie
BJ, I never heard this story before, but I did enjoy it and will look up more about it. Thanks so much for sharing. I just showed it to Roy, he is a history buff and knew about Wirt but not the house.
Happy Halloween

Oh I think I remember my husband talking about this place before. You know he travels and sees all kinds of neat stuff...and eats at great places...while I have PBJ. :) I'd rather be where I am though.
Happy Day!
This was a fascinating post, BJ. That one aerial view is stunning. I loved the tour and if I'm ever in the area will make it a point to visit the mansion. Do you ever have the thought that some folks misappropriated the money the gods of fortune dealt them :-). Have a wonderful Pink Saturday.
i'd ove to see that house!
Happy Halloween and Happy Pink Saturday!

Searching for a Starry Night, A Miniature Art Mystey - bff's, a missing mini painting and a nosy Dachshund = a fun kid's mystery!
BJ, haunted or not, that is a beautiful house!!
HAPPY PS!
Wowee, the mansion is just beautiful, but obviously Mrs. Winchester didn't know squat about ghosts. They do NOT like constant construction. At least, in an older home, any kind of demo can get the ghosts all stirred up!
Justine :o )
I think this story is great, thankyou for such a fun post. I love a house that has doors leading to nowhere. What an imagination they had and the money to do all those fun things with. Ghosts? I like the idea but can't say for sure, I never close the door completely on that subject, if I did, who would scare me??!! Happy Pink Saturday and Happy Halloween too, Char
Happy Pink Saturday and Happy Halloween!
Love this mansion!

How FABULOUS and how interesting too. I'm sure I've seen that staircase featured in a film: The Changeling, with George C Scott, made back in the 70s I think.
Happy Halloween and Spooky Pink Saturday!

I've never heard of this house, but I've heard of the rifles. I really was thinking from the first picture how pretty it is...and then I saw all of that house from above. It is strange and spooky. I loved the story.
