DEAN MARTIN.....SUCH A VOICE...and such a funny personality....
I JUST LOVED HIM TO PIECES.....

*
"The music of the 1950s flourished as a result of the previous decade. The 50s saw the emergence and rise of what would come to be known as Rock ‘n Roll, but it was also witnessed the popularity of Country and Western music in a variety of forms. Musicians like Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Hank Williams helped to redefine the entertainment industry with the types of music that they created during this time period. Following the detrimental effects of World War II, the United States was about to embark on a musical journey that changed the face of music for decades to come."

I am sure that the music of our teen-age years is the music we end up
loving, forever and ever....
well.....I was a teenager in the 50's and, let me tell you,
WE HAD THE BEST DANG MUSIC THERE HAS EVER BEEN.....!!
*
just a few of MY favorites......
*
* "GOODNESS, GRACIOUS.........GREAT BALLS OF FIRE"
Oh, yeah....JERRY LEE LEWIS....
definitely A HUGH FAVORITE OF MINE....
*
*
AND, if you ever liked JERRY LEE, I hope you got the chance to see this
ADORABLE movie....if not, you can still RENT IT.... and please think of ME when you watch it....:O)

*

yep, even when we all knew he had maried his FOURTEEN YEAR OLD COUSIN,
we still loved his music...(i'm not sure but i think he was pretty crazy)
That marriage dang near cost him his career.....
*
*
"I found my thrilllll.....on BLUEBERRY HILL.....it lingered until......my dreams came true."
when i saw MR. DOMINO in person,
I was real weak for about a week !
He was so so good...
*
MEMPHIS, TENNESSE...
woo hoo ..

CARL PERKINS....wrote BLUE SUEDE SHOES ...
story is that, one day ELVIS called CARL and asked if it was ok for him to record
BLUE SUEDE SHOES....
CARL said it was the BEST thing that ever happened to him..
because the success of the song, sung by ELVIS was HUGH !!!
*
*
The ONE AND ONLY time I ever saw THE KING in person, I jumped up and down, spun around, sobbed, almost fainted 16 times, almost wet my pants, hugged my girlfriend (we're not gay), swooned again and again and screamed so hard, I couldn't have even said HI to him if I had the chance !! Couldn't talk for 2 days!!
My favorite song of his, of ALL TIMES, is
"THAT'S ALRIGHT, MAMA"....*sigh heavy duty
*
*

THIS FELLA, CHUCK BERRY....OH MY GOSH...
HE was so full of energy that he set the stage on fire !
'MAYBELLINE, WHY CAN'T 'CHA BE TRUE...OH, MAYBELLINE, WHY CAN'T 'CHA BE TRUE".....

*
*

and OF COURSE....
MR. JOHNNY CASH....
later to become known as THE MAN IN BLACK....
I sure do miss him!
I saw him in person, only once, and I just KNOW he winked at me before going on stage...
now...my girlfriend says he winked at HER and we have been fussing about it
for almost 55 years !!!!!
ooo, and my friend's name is ALICE !! (he was lookin' at ME, Alice !!)
*
*

When BILL HALEY and THE COMETS sang ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK...
I could not keep from dancing TO SAVE MY LIFE.......
THEN, I SAW HIS PICTURE....WITH THAT GOOFY HAIRDO ...
and I nearly died...back then, we didn't see their photos that often and I always bought the little 45 records that didn't have their pictures on them like the large records in jackets.....

*
*

GOOD GOLLY, MISS MOLLY.....
when I went to see LITTLE RICHARD in concert at the age of 16.....
I screamed my tonsils right out of my throat.....!!
He is the cutest little guy !!
*
*
DORIS DAY will ALWAYS be my favorite female singer....KASARRA SARRA....
and, oh, what a great little actress she was...
when she and ROCK HUDSON starred in a movie together, it was just short of MAGNIFICENT...they were so great together on that big screen....
she so .........beautiful...
him so........handsome...
*
*
AND.......

BY FAR....MY ALL- TIME FAVORITE...MR. RAY CHARLES...
'america, america, god shed his grace on thee.....'

I will miss Mr. Charles til the day I die !!
*****************************************************************
THANK YA'LL for letting me share these great singers of my time....
I have so taken a long walk down MEMORY LANE today and.......
I almost...ALMOST...have gone back to those fabulous, carefree days in the
50's.......

  1. BJ ...

Thank you for the walk down Memory Lane. I, too, loved (and still love) the music of the 50s. Some of those singers you mentioned were truly one of a kind and they don't make many like that any more, whose music will still be played 50+ years later.

    Great post!

  2. That was some good music! I wasn't born til '58 ;>), but my Aunt was just "In Love with" Elvis and I still love Johnny Cash. When my girls were young teens we got a Johhny Cash CD and they moaned and groaned about the musuc. They got another for their dad for Christmas that year and then proceeded to play it til we thought they would wear it out. They got all their friends converted to CAsh fans too and it was the funniest thing to see all those 15 year olds at parties listening to Johhny Cash!

  3. Great great post today, my friend. Now,let me see of the ones you posted, I have met backstage, with Johnny Cash, so drunk he almost fell on me when my uncle was taking my picture with him, Jerry Lee Lewis, sat with him in the bleachers while he and my uncle talked about when they were block masons. Carl Perkins, so drunk he ended up not even going on stage that night. In those years, there would be 10 to 12 performers come to Curtis Hixon Hall, in Tampa all at the same time.I don't remember how or why , I was about 16 when my uncle took me over to see these entertainers. And we always would go back stage. Try doing that in today's time. They were all very young then too, just starting to be famous. The one I never got to see and my idol was Elvis. You and I must be the same age, well we are, and your favorites were mine too. Except, I didn't see James Dean mentioned here. Oh, I was so in love with him....Great walk down memory lane. Come by , I've got a tag for you.

    Love Ya,
    Chris

  4. This walk down memory lane is a great way to start my day. About all I listen to is music from the 50's, 60's and country. Do you remember the song "Green Door"? I was in grade school and my sister would play this song. I loved it so much I talked Mom into painting the inside of my bedroom door green.

  5. I was a teenager in the late sixties and early seventies, and that is the music I love best.

My mother always loved and still loves Elvis. My father loved Dean Martin and Ray Charles.

  6. Thanks BJ!! My fave from that time period is always and will aways be ELVIS!
And the Doris Day, oh the dresses she wore! She is really from before my time, but I think I have seen most of her movies. And they are still so great. And the others are so good too! Fats Domino. YAY!!

I am a product of 1957 but had a 12 year older brother who LOVED Elvis and his time period music, so he installed that love in me too.

    Hugs from Marian

  10. Those were the days, my friend.
    I thought they'd never end.
We'd sing and dance forever and a day.
We'd live the life we'd choose.
    We'd fight and never lose.
For we were young and sure to have our way.

  16. Such fun going down memory lane with you. I saw Bill Haley and the Comets in about l955 in person. Kids were dancing in the isles, and security made them stop. It was a great concert in a high school stadium with good seats. What fun we had that night even though someone broke into our parked car during the concert and stole my purse. Memories!!! Sally

  17. BJ, This is the music I grew up with. My daddy loved music. He taught us to dance at a very.. early age. The 50's music is still some of my favorite. And it sure brings back good memories. I could jitter-bug before I was 10. And the twist. I loved to twist among others. Wouldn't it be fun to have a blogger pj's party. WE could stay up all night dancing to these favorites.
    Hugs, Terrie

  18. Oh I just love music and all it's American glory. Maybe that's why I almost minored in music in college. I took a whole course on Elvis! So crazy and fun.

I just went to the New Kids on the Block concert a few months ago and had the time of my life. I was reliving my childhood at that concert!

  19. Hi BJ
I wasn't a teenager in the 50s but I do enjoy that music. My teenage years were around 1970 and I feel the same about the music of my time also. Its wonderful to have great music to enjoy whenever and whatever your mood at the time.
thank you for this interesting post and pics.
hope you are having a great day!

  20. I wasn't born until 64,but coming from a musical family I love all the old music. Did I ever tell you my mom went to church with Jerry Lee? they were in choir together. He is the cousin of Jimmy Swaggert. Jimmy's dad was the preacher. she said Jerry and Jimmy would get in there and play boggie woggie's on the piano before the choir leader got there. hehe the good old days for her.

  21. I'm glad I was a teenager in the 50s. Maybe that's why I think that music is the best. Oh dear, these poor teenagers now.
The only one of these singers I saw in person was Elvis. Wow Wow Wow! I was and still am an Elvis fan.
    Thanks for the memories.
Oh, I loved Dean Martin too.

  22. I was born in 1953 so I was a little young for the 50's music. However, I had a sister and brother who were 7 and 9 years older than me so I was exposed to the music.

I remember Dean Martin from his TV show and from the Martin/Lewis movies.

His voice was like melted butter or silk, take your pick.

  27. I tried to post a comment and it said I had a duplication, so will start over.
Thanks for the memories. I too got to see Elvis perform in concert before he died...I was such a big fan of his (still am). There was a club I hung out at that had singers performing before they became popular...Ike and Tina Turner, the Beach Boys, and lots others that I can't even remember. (I have CRS, lol).
Do you ever watch the Do Wap shows on PBS television?
The music of the 50's and 60's was the best.

  28. What a great idea! Although I was born in the early 60's, I grew up listening to and I still listen to Elvis, Johnny Cash, Fats Domino, Dean Martin, and all of the above. My Mom's favorite Elvis song is Heartbreak Hotel and mine is Teddy Bear! My Dad's favorite Johnny Cash song is Cry, Cry Cry....and of course it wouldn't be Christmas without "Blue Christmas". I went to a Fats Domino concert when I was a teen, and a Johnny Cash concert, too. ~ Robyn

I love this post! This is so great.

Not to brag, but....My husband, here in L.A., was joining some people at a private club (he works for a non-profit org and was going to see donors) and stepped into the elvator of the bldg where the club was locatd and - OMG! Little Richard was stepping out of the elevator.

My husband nodded and said, "Hello, Mr. Penniman. I admire your work."

Little R said, "Why, thank you!"
