A PRECIOUS NEW BANNER, A DUSTING OF SNOW and OATMEAL COOKIES

ooooo, I just got this new, WINTER banner from MIKA, the lovely daughter of TINA at CHERRY HILL COTTAGE. Mika makes the prettiest letters and banners and you can check it all out at CHERRY HILL COTTAGE, a delightful blog. Stop by there today and take a look. Many thanks, MIKA....I love this banner and, look.....in my favorite black and white !! :)
NOTE: I can barely wait until I can get a SPRING banner to hang above my kitchen sink. THEN, a SUMMER...

We had just a dusting of snow the other day and it put me instantly into BAKING MODE. And, if you've not noticed, our favorite desserts are PIES and COOKIES. We just aren't as crazy about cake. Now, there's a couple that I like....BURNT SUGAR CAKE and White cake with Real Fudge Icing...none of the powdered sugar icings for me...they taste good but are just a tad too sweet for my taste. The kind of chocolate icing I like is almost like candy...old fashioned FUDGE candy, with pecans....UMMMMM

But, I've never met a cookie that I didn't like !!!!

I found a new recipe for an old cookie and, boy, they are soooo tasty. I really liked them. If you try them or already have this recipe, I hope you like them, too.

FAMOUS OATMEAL COOKIES

1 CUP FIRMLY PACKED BROWN SUGAR

3/4 CUP VEGETABLE SHORTENING

1/2 CUP GRANULATED SUGAR

1 EGG

1/4 CUP WATER

1 TEASPOON VANILLA

3 CUPS QUICK OR OLD FASHIONED OATS, UNCOOKED

1 CUP ALL -PURPOSE FLOUR

1 TEASPOON SALT

1/2 TEASPOON BAKING SODA

1 CUP PECANS (LARGE PIECES) (well, ok, I added these but pecans just make every thing taste better! Of course, you can make them without nuts!)
****************
Heat oven to 350. In lg. bowl, beat brown sugar, shortening and sugar until creamy. Add egg, water and vanilla and beat well. Add combined oats, flour, salt and baking soda, mixing well.

Drop by rounded teaspoonsfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake 11 to 13 minutes. Remove and cool completely (except for the hot ones you eat with a cup of tea or a cold glass of milk). Store tightly covered.

**BLOGGER WON'T CHECK MY SPELLING FOR ME AND I AM THE WORLD'S WORST SPELLER SO PLEASE....JUST OVERLOOK!

Wonderful day!

Good morning Bj,
The banner is beautiful, I love the black and white as well. Oatmeal cookies are my favorit, my husband bakes cookies every Wed. for our oldest grandson (4) but he make the chocolate chip. But when I make them I make oatmeal. I always use the recipe on the hershey's cocoa box for my chocolate frosting. I so glad your doing so good. I want your docter!!!
Blessings,
ginger

OH, I am sure your spelling's not as bad as mine. I hope they fix it. If I need to check a work I just use my spell check from my email from compose and just have it open so I can just pull it up when needed. It a bit of a inconvenience, but it helps. And also I don't know what happen to my pictures yesterday but you are right there up now, thank-you thank-you for checking that for me.

Hi BJ,

I love your new banner from Mika, she is such a talented young lady. I'm also oogling over your dessert platter and giggling because I have that exact same goose with the heart hanging on the back side of my front door. We seem to have very similar taste in decor!

Happy Saturday,
Dena

Hi BJ That banner looks wonderful in your home. Black & white is perfect for you! Those oatmeal cookies look delicious. That is the same recipe I have. When the kids were young and no one had moved out yet I used to make oatmeal & chocolate chip cookies almost everyday. Glad you're doing well. I will put Deena on my prayer list. Hope you have a great weekend. Rhondi xo

Your banner is positively beautiful, BJ. I love it and am going to check out your friend's site.

Oatmeal cookies are delicious. Grandma used to make some very similar to these. I can smell them baking still.

Take care and please stop by and enter my Easter giveaway.

Blessings,
Mary

That a nice banner, BJ. Your cookies and cake sound and look wonderful. I have got to stop eating this stuff, though. The neighbor just dropped by with jelly donuts and birthday cake left from her H's bd yesterday. Stop...stop.....stop....... I'm going to be as big as a house!
Hugs,
Nan

Love the banner... And I want to make these cookies... Oatmeal are one of my faves!
I have been thinking about these special cookies that my Grandma used to make - special because they were MY favorite, lol - and I haven't made them in years... They are basically two thin round sugar cookies, baked together with a date filling in the middle... mmm, I can taste them now!
Tomorrow is supposed to be really cold again, so other than a trip out for groceries, I think I will spend some time tomorrow baking! :)

PS - Blogger wouldn't spell-check mine, either...

I just read this recipe and am caring for kids at a home where they do not bake much. I used the rock hard brown sugar with a tad of water added and nuked it soft. I added yogurtinstead of water and used b. soda and added walnuts as there were no pecans. I also added 2 small handfuls of honey bunches of oats cereal... MMMMN! Thanks!
Boy are the kids liking them...
