Home Companion Paper Dolls

Hi, all,
Hope all is good in your world....things great here at Sweet Nothings.

PAPER DOLLS
and it took me right back to my childhood.

(This may be getting slightly away from the SUBECT... BUT....hang on...
you'll see where it ties right back to paper dolls....:)

I love my Home Companion Magazines and I display several of them....

Pretty cool magazine holder, hu..?
I designed it and my MASTER CARPENTER MR. SWEET built it for me...
and one for daughter, Stacy...
and one for daughter in law, Kathy.

My cousin, Skeet, and I used to play with our paper dolls for hours on end.
If we were 'lucky', we would get a whole book of paper dolls to cut out and play with.
If we couldn't get "real" paper dolls, we cut figures out of the SEARS AND ROBUCK CATALOG.
O, how our imaginations would run wild.

We had the best time pretending our dolls were real....
our voices would get high...like when you talk to a baby...
and we would strut those dolls all over my bedroom.

My girl didn't play with paper dolls....
she and her best friends played with BARBIES.
Then, when HER girls came along, they played with AMERICAN GIRL dolls.

I have a few HOME COMPANION magazines, by MARY ENGELBRIET,
and each magazine had a page of PAPER DOLLS.
I am now in a collection mode and searching for more
Home Companion magazines....
because I want to frame some of these cute pages of paper dolls Mary drew so adorably.
I think, framed just right, they will be adorable somewhere in my new bedroom at
THE SUMMER HOUSE...

TOMMY....
I would love to find this little guy.

ahhhh....and look at her cute pets...

The pets and the boy and her are all cuties. I played with paper dolls, they were mostly elegant movie stars like Cyd Charisse.

Hi BJ. I have all the home companion magazine s.
I would be more than glad to give you my paper dolls, but I gave them to a friend's daughter.
I do hope you find them.
I wasn't in to playing with dolls as a child. But, I loved my paper dolls.
Thank you for the fond memory. Blessings, Becky

Hi Bj, Your post brought back memories. We played with paper dolls when I was growing up. We would make dresses out of paper coloring them to have more outfits. Those were the good old days. Have a wonderful day. Hugs and Prayers from Your Missouri Friend.

Oh my goodness.. These ARE REALLY CUTE! Hope you find some more!.. I do remember my sister and I playing paper dolls quite a bit! I remember making my own too!.. But we played with Barbies just as much! Maybe we were right between trends? Whatever the case, whenever I see them, I still love paper dolls, and see/print them whenever I can.. My last most favorite paper doll find was when I found a Clark Gable paper doll! I was on Cloud 9!!!.. Thanks for the memories, and have a great week BJ! ~tina

I miss that magazine so very much. I played with those paper dolls from ME Home Companion Magazine all the time. My oldest daughter loved them!

I don't know if I still have any of the dolls, but I'll check and see.

BJ, my sister and I played with paper dolls for hours on end. We'd spread a quilt on the grass and had a great time. I have some of ME's paper dolls. I'll check my files. We played with Betsy McCall paper dolls as well as books of dolls. They are of course long ago lost.
Cute idea to frame them.......Sarah

Oh, what a special post, BJ. When we were young, my sisters and I would play "catalog cutouts". We cut various room displays out of the Sears Roebuck and JC Penney catalogs my mom got in the mail, and would make pretend homes in a big square...we sat in the middle of the square and moved our little people (also cutouts from the catalogs) around in their homes! It was hours of fun! With six of us girls, I'm sure my mom was happy we had the imagination that cost so little and made us busy! :)

XO,
Jane

I played with paper dolls when it was raining and miserable outside. If it was nice I was out catching tadpoles, frogs or climbing trees (can you tell I was a tomboy!!). That being said those are such cute paper dolls that I might have been a bit tempted to stay in and act more like a little girl.

God bless.

BJ, you're bringing back memories to me too! I loved playing with paper dolls for hours. I did just like you and would find some little cutie in the catalog and then go searching for clothes to put on her! My daughter loved them too but hers where made out of the magnetic plastic so the clothes would just stick to them.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)

Oh, I remember seeing these when I read Home Companion. That's been years ago.

I enjoyed paper dolls, too. I loved my Barbies, but paper dolls were fun, too, and I sure did use my imagination!

bj- Couldn't you just print the paper doll pages off and frame them? I have all mine saved, too, and waiting for one of the grandgirls to take an interest in them. Aren't they darling? xo Diana

Oh I loved paper dolls too - and definately cut up S and R cats when necessary!

I wish I had kept mine, I really loved them but I am a purger.

Love ME's - they are DARLING and would make a really cute craft for sure!

I have a few of her magazines and took the paper dolls out to give to a friend for her birthday as she remembers playing with them when she was little. Great idea to frame them for your summer house. Have a wonderful week. Tammy

The ME paper dolls are so fun. I remember the Betsy McCall magazine paper dolls from my childhood. My cousin and I didn't use catalog paper dolls but we used old Simplicity and McCalls pattern books. I love your magazine rack, and thanks for the mention!

Oh how I LOVED my paper dolls! But I am a doll person! These are just lovely!

A note on your house sale! I was raised Catholic and I don't practice all the praying to saints etc. but a good friend of mine who had to sell while they were moving to Texas buried a small statue of Saint Joseph in their backyard and she swears the house sold that very week! It is sure something you may want to google!
Best of luck to you and your honey!

Oh, such memories, BJ! We lived in a rather remote area when I growing up in Louisiana and paper dolls were my greatest source of entertainment. My grandparents bought lots of the paper doll books for me, and I spent hours cutting them out just perfectly. I used discarded catalogs, too. My favorite paper dolls were The McGuire Sisters (remember them?).

I loved Mary's Home Companion magazine and truly miss that euphoric feeling of seeing that arrive in the mail....lol! I've discarded all of the magazines now, but saved all the wonderful cardstock weight pictures and paper dolls. I've used several in my craft room, and have been color-copying some of the paper dolls for my youngest granddaughters. They are just so cute! Good luck with your search!

We are sister, BJ. I played with paper dolls too! I loved them so much that I created a folder of paper dolls for future grandchildren. Alas, my grandchildren were never interested and the folder's long gone.

Happy Blue Monday, BJ.

I never had store bought paper dolls. The first ones were paper folded and you cut out your own, Then we got a Sears book and used it then. I had no interest in them when I first saw the store bought ones.

The paper dolls are cute - but I love that magazine rack! That is so cool.

I too loved to play with paper dolls, I still love to just collect them. Betsy McCall I remember the most and we used to cut them from Sears Catalogues. Your magazine rack is really nice, love those talented hubbys.

Such happy memories! Most of mine came from catalogues and I filled my pretend home with things I thought were so beautiful from the same magazines. I do remember having Lennon Sisters paper dolls. My dad's shoe made a perfect paper doll car!

Your magazine rack is great. I still enjoy going back every once and awhile to look at my ME Home Companion Magazines. When I was a little girl, I was never much into paper dolls (I preferred live animals of every sort. doll clothes often fit thm) but as an adult I just loved ME's pages of paper dolls. I would never cut up my magazines for them, but I bet they could be copied on cardstock paper. If I ever have a little grand daughter, there will be paper dolls.
I think when I finish this, I'll go back and look at my Home Companions, and maybe put them all together in one place.

I have 35-40 of these great magazines, all with the paper dolls still intact! Just love them and have been thinking about putting them in my antiques booth for sale. I loved playing with paper dolls and remember having a Trisha Nixon set!

So cute! Loved seeing your friend's Shirley Temple paper doll, too. Plus those nurses were awfully lovely.

Hi BJ! Love you blog! I really enjoyed this post about paper dolls. I played with them too! I even enjoyed cutting them out. My daughter's were punch out. Much easier. Hope you find all the old magazines! Framing the doll pages is a great idea. Your anniversary photos are great. How blessed you are to have had such a long marriage!
Have a blessed week!

I loved paper dolls as a child. I do have a couple of pages of the Home Companion paper dolls saved in a file folder and I've thought of framing them for my sewing room - which is also where my granddaughter takes her naps. I'll bet she would love them.! Great idea, BJ.

I played with Betsy McCall, do you remember the paper dolls in the back of McCall's magazine?
I have a few Home Companion's are you looking for just the little boy?

I had so many paper dolls and I loved them all! What sweet memories to look back and remember times playing and pretending. I'm so sorry my granddaughters don't know the joy of paper dolls. I'll have to find some for them so they can share the fun, too.
