Hey, everybody.
Hope things are going just right for you this week.
It's been a good week for us....HOWEVER....our realtor didn't bring one single solitary couple by to see our
FOR SALE HOUSE.
Open house on Saturday but.....I have my doubts about THAT.
ANYway...
when I was in high school, we had a FAVORITE HANGOUT...
THE CORRAL DRIVE IN
that made the BEST steak fingers......EVER !
I can still taste them to this very day...
always served in plastic baskets with
THICK TEXAS TOAST....
a small bowl of CREAMED GRAVY
and
FRENCH FRIES.....
I have searched HI and LO for steak fingers that were as good as those in the '50's.....
some have come close.....but......
not close enuf.
When I just can't stand it any longer and
MUST have STEAK FINGERS...
I usually make them myself.

Cubed, tenderized STEAK....
cut into strips,
DOUBLE dipped in an egg/milk mixture,
then into flour.
I put my spices into the milk mixture before dipping the meat.
O SO GOOOOD.
We don't eat many FRIED foods any more and I always really drain the steak very thoroughly...
but ever so often,
we DO have something fried....!!
but ever so often,

The drive ins ALWAYS served FRENCH FRIES....
I suppose they still do.
I suppose they still do.
O, so good....but not all that good FOR US.
So....I generally BAKE hash brown patties to go with our homemade steak fingers.
and all drive ins serve that
CREAMED GRAVY to dip the steak fingers in.....
again...not too good for our bodies...
As much as we would RATHER have GRAVY,
I try to serve a green veggie of some kind....
and we both LOVE Steamers Broccoli Cuts.
ONE THING that has not changed from my drive in
STEAK FINGERS IN A BASKET is....
KETCHUP !!!
YEP...while Mr. Sweet pours KETCHUP
OVER his steak fingers and hash browns,
I use it as a DIP.....
even back in the
1950's !

Oh yum...these look delicious! This would be perfect to link-up to my Create It Thursday post...it's live now! http://www.lambertslately.com/2013/05/create-it-thursday-4-plus-features.html
ReplyDeleteI accidentally clicked on your link on a bloghop and I'M SO GLAD I DID! Your profile pic made me smile and I knew I would just love your blog! And this post looks delicious! I'm your newest follower via GFC, looking very forward to reading your blog!
ReplyDeleteYUM!! YUM!!! We USUALLY eat 'healthy' - but every once in awhile - we HAVE to have SOMETHING that TASTE good!!! That is often a hamburger and fries or ONION rings - or a good chicken fried steak!! You know, if we USUALLY eat right - it's OKAY to splurge every once in awhile! LD's heart doctor told him to eat well 3 weeks and then take one week to ENJOY life!!! Good advice!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you told us just what Steak Fingers are, as I'd never heard of them. I have come to the conclusion that if I lived where you do I'd be the size of a house. All the things you show us and feature look SO GOOD!!!
ReplyDeleteUm ummm good! We love fried foods every now and then. These look very tasty! They are sort of like chicken fried steak, I'd guess.
ReplyDeleteWow BJ, that looks so good. Unfortunately can't have all that anymore, but it sure looks good. Never had any steak fingers.
ReplyDeleteHope that Saturday will bring a Sold Sign for you. Good luck.
Mary
Mmmm, I remember making steak fingers. Have not for years. Now that my husband has an allergy to beef, I do not think I will ever make them again. I will just have to enjoy them through you :)
ReplyDeleteLove your dishes, so fun and cute!
I haven't had cubed steak in years BJ! Your steak fingers look great:@)
ReplyDeleteI like that you've found ways to enjoy something you like, but have made it a healthier dish!
ReplyDeleteI'm visiting today from Thursday's Favorite Things. Thanks for sharing!
looks yummy good!!! interesting about the ketchup. that is too funny!! ( :
ReplyDeleteJust like Pondsie up above me there, I've never heard of steak fries either! Must be a Western thing. They sure look good!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more with your method of 'everything in moderation'. After DH's ♥ attack, I went crazy trying to eliminate so many unhealthy items, that he rebelled & said "What's the use of living if I can't have _______ (fill in the blank)
Now we indulge occasionally to keep life fun & interesting.
Thanks for telling us how you make them & for the broccoli steamers recommendation. I tried their green beans once & we didn't care for them, so I've never bought another. I shall give the broccoli a chance.
Hugs,
Rett
I've never heard of these, BJ, but it looks like something my husband would like.
ReplyDeleteNo fried food for me either. It doesn't like me.
Oh my goodness girlie, that LOOKS DELICIOUS:) I remember having those in my younger years also at a drive-in! Have a blessed week dear friend, HUGS!
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that things that taste so good are so bad for you? I had fried chicken TWICE last week! I am so bad.
ReplyDeleteThat looks seriously yummy. We love chicken fried steak fingers. I could eat broccoli every day!
ReplyDeleteNow that is a meal I can eat. Everything looks so delicious. have a blessed day. Madeline
ReplyDeleteYum! Yum! Yum! Oh, BJ, how did you know I love steak fingers! I did the same thing in high school. There was a little drive in we would go to and order steak finger baskets. I've never tasted any as good since. Well, I haven't tasted yours and I'll bet they're wonderful!
ReplyDeletebe a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
That's one of my DH's favorite meals, and he still indulges in them about once a week at our local drive-in. I made some a few weeks ago, so thanks for the reminder. It would be better for him to have the homemade. And I love broccoli!
ReplyDeleteIn Idaho, we call them Finger Steaks and they are on every menu at every restuarant! We love to make elk finger steaks, marinated in orange soda, lemon lime soda and soy sauce, then battered and fried and dipped in cocktail sauce or honey! Oh, now I know what I am making for dinner this weekend!!
ReplyDelete~Trisha
Is that like chicken fried steak? I vaguely remember that from my college days in OK. Anyway, whatever they are, they look yummy and very different from anything we serve up here. I like how you've made it over into a more healthful meal and a more colorful one, too.
ReplyDeleteHowdy BJ! bring all of your tasty recipes on over to Farmgirl Friday anytime! Feel free to spread the word.. the more ( FOOD ) the merrier! dEB

ReplyDeleteWell, I've never had a steak finger but that post really made me want some.... bad. wonder if I could make them. Hard to cook for one, you know.
ReplyDeleteI know you are going to feel sorry for me, but I have never heard of a steak finger! These look so delicious though, I might throw caution to the wind eat them with fries and gravy too;>)
ReplyDeleteYou just have to treat yourself sometimes!
ReplyDeleteHi BJ,
