OLD FASHIONED STEAK FINGERS

Hey, everybody.
Hope things are going just right for you this week. It's been a good week for us....HOWEVER....our realtor didn't bring one single solitary couple by to see our FOR SALE HOUSE. Open house on Saturday but.....I have my doubts about THAT.

ANYway...

when I was in high school, we had a FAVORITE HANGOUT...
THE CORRAL DRIVE IN
that made the BEST steak fingers......EVER !

I can still taste them to this very day...
always served in plastic baskets with
THICK TEXAS TOAST....
a small bowl of CREAMED GRAVY
and
FRENCH FRIES.....

I have searched HI and LO for steak fingers that were as good as those in the '50's.....
some have come close.....but......
not close enuf.

When I just can't stand it any longer and
MUST have STEAK FINGERS...
I usually make them myself.

Cubed, tenderized STEAK....
cut into strips,
DOUBLE dipped in an egg/milk mixture,
then into flour.

I put my  spices into the milk mixture before dipping the meat.

O SO GOOOOD.
We don't eat many FRIED foods any more and I always really drain the steak very thoroughly...
but ever so often,
we DO have something fried....!!

The drive ins ALWAYS served FRENCH FRIES....
I suppose they still do.
O, so good....but not all that good FOR US.

So....I generally BAKE  hash brown patties to go with our homemade steak fingers.

and all drive ins serve that
CREAMED GRAVY to dip the steak fingers in.....

again...not too good for our bodies...

As much as we would RATHER have GRAVY,
I try to serve a green  veggie of some kind....
and we both LOVE Steamers Broccoli Cuts.

ONE THING that has not changed from my drive in
STEAK FINGERS IN A BASKET is....
KETCHUP !!!
YEP...while Mr. Sweet pours KETCHUP OVER his steak fingers and hash browns,
I use it as a DIP.....
even back in the
1950's !

  3. YUM!! YUM!!! We USUALLY eat 'healthy' - but every once in awhile - we HAVE to have SOMETHING that TASTE good!!! That is often a hamburger and fries or ONION rings - or a good chicken fried steak!! You know, if we USUALLY eat right - it's OKAY to splurge every once in awhile! LD's heart doctor told him to eat well 3 weeks and then take one week to ENJOY life!!! Good advice!

  4. I'm so glad you told us just what Steak Fingers are, as I'd never heard of them. I have come to the conclusion that if I lived where you do I'd be the size of a house. All the things you show us and feature look SO GOOD!!!

  7. Mmmm, I remember making steak fingers. Have not for years. Now that my husband has an allergy to beef, I do not think I will ever make them again. I will just have to enjoy them through you :)
Love your dishes, so fun and cute!

  11. Just like Pondsie up above me there, I've never heard of steak fries either! Must be a Western thing. They sure look good!

I couldn't agree more with your method of 'everything in moderation'. After DH's ♥ attack, I went crazy trying to eliminate so many unhealthy items, that he rebelled & said "What's the use of living if I can't have _______ (fill in the blank)
Now we indulge occasionally to keep life fun & interesting.

Thanks for telling us how you make them & for the broccoli steamers recommendation. I tried their green beans once & we didn't care for them, so I've never bought another. I shall give the broccoli a chance.

    Hugs,
    Rett

  14. Why is it that things that taste so good are so bad for you? I had fried chicken TWICE last week! I am so bad.

  18. That's one of my DH's favorite meals, and he still indulges in them about once a week at our local drive-in. I made some a few weeks ago, so thanks for the reminder. It would be better for him to have the homemade. And I love broccoli!

  19. In Idaho, we call them Finger Steaks and they are on every menu at every restuarant! We love to make elk finger steaks, marinated in orange soda, lemon lime soda and soy sauce, then battered and fried and dipped in cocktail sauce or honey! Oh, now I know what I am making for dinner this weekend!!

  20. Is that like chicken fried steak? I vaguely remember that from my college days in OK. Anyway, whatever they are, they look yummy and very different from anything we serve up here. I like how you've made it over into a more healthful meal and a more colorful one, too.
