A JOY....RAIN

Hi, Ya'll
This last weekend we had.....R.A.I.N.
You know, maybe it's because I've never lived where it rains a lot.....this reason for loving rain so much. I like every single thing that comes with rain....the dampness, of course, the dark and cozy day it almost always brings....the urge to bake...to sit in my porch swing and "watch it rain".....to crawl beneath the warm and fuzzy blanket and take a fabulous nap.....waking up to have a slice of whatever I've baked on that rainy day....
 ....little  cherry pies.....

made with left over crust and sweetened tart cherries...

so good with a favorite drink.

My mom made the best cherry pie.
I have her recipe and I use it sometimes.

Other times, I use the recipe on the can of tart cherries...it's really good, too.
I never, EVER use CANNED
PIE FILLING...I prefer the tart cherries that I can sweeten myself.

Sometimes, when I came home from school, Mom would have these little pies all ready for brother and I.

I am pretty sure SHE didn't use canned pie filling...bet they didn't even have it in the '50s.

I especially remember one day when I was a freshman in high school...
this would have been 1953.
The rain was pouring....
we had only one car and my dad had used the car that day to go to work...his ride with a fella worker fell thru, I guess
...ANYway, Mother didn't have a way to pick me up at school.
We lived a couple of miles or more from the school
and I walked home in the rain..

 and I was NOT singing...
**
...by the way, this movie came out in 1952, the year before I started high school.
From that day on, I was so totally in love with
GENE KELLY, I could barely eat.
I loved him til the day he died and I will start all over again when I get to HEAVEN.
The movie has been hailed as the greatest musical EVER made and I will believe it to my dying day.
If, by ANY chance, you have never seen it....get on AMAZON and order it.

Back to my WALKIN IN THE RAIN  story...
Mother and my Aunt Lillian had a big plate of little pies made, along with HOT CHOCOLATE....and when I came in the door, Aunt Lillian had a big, fluffy towel all ready for me to dry off with...I sure felt loved that rainy day.
No wonder I LOVE RAIN.

Don't forget to leave all the comments you want on MY GIVEAWAY PAGE......
One of these candles sure would smell luscious in your home. :))

GOOD LUCK!

I love that movie and I have always thought Gene Kelly was such a hunk! I love the rain too, and up here in Michigan we get a fair amount. I especially love thunder storms and the smell of the rain and going tobed at night to the sound of it on the roof:>) And I would LOVE one of those little cherry pies! What a sweet memory you have of the ones your mom made for you that day. Sounds like a mom who loved her kids!

Thank goodness we were blessed last weekend with some much needed rain. May get a little more this weekend. Turned cooler as well. I could really enjoy a big slice of your pie and a hot cup of coffee.

What a great story about walking home in the rain. Don't you just know that your mother and aunt were stewing about it that day, too. Love the happy ending.

In Minnesota we have a very short summer so I usually don't want much rain. But last summer was way to dry. The cherry tarts look good.

Amazingly enough Caleb used to love that movie! He would sit and watch the whole thing. That and "The Music Man".
Love those little pies. I always use canned cherry pie filling, but I use 2 cans!

I join you in the love of rainy days - complete with the dark coziness that comes with them!

I'm enjoying the sound of rain on our camper roof these days. Not as good as a TIN roof but still nice!

Mini cherry pies.... Yummy.

After three months of no rain, I am so happy to see that we have some forecast for this week. Everything just got so brown and dried up.

God Bless

mmmm cherry pie and hot chocolate, that sounds just right after a hard day at school! We have to much rain here in Scotland so I wouldn't mind some of your sun!!

BJ, I'm sitting here having my evening cup of tea and dreaming of one of those little cherry tarts. Yum!
We had some glorious rain over the weekend. Left us with cooler temps as well. So thankful!

Rain huh. I have some memories of it. Like from my childhood. Is rain still wet like I remember it?

I love visiting here...you transport me back to when I was growing up here in rural Georgia. We always rode the big yellow bus,and the driver made his turn around a good "football" length from our home,if it was raining, well we was gonna get wet,but you know we didn't seem to care back then, and mama always had something good for us to snack on and we could never leave for school that morning without eating something(our mama's were awesome-I miss mine everyday)...love these cherry pies,I could probable eat two or three right now and it's only 6am(here).

correction..."football field"...in southern terms,that's about 3 or 4 hundred yards,tehehehe.

Everything about this story makes me feel warm and happy. It's funny how those little things that were done to nurture us stay with us forever. I have a similar memory with my mom and hot chocolate. That's one of the two reasons that I love the stuff. The other one is because it's chocolate.

(And I saw your note on my post, and my heart hurt. I Have already prayed for you. )

I have a can of tart cherries in the cupboard....going to try these! The canned cherry pie filling is almost too sweet for me and too few cherries in it....thanks

Oh and btw, do you remember that song by... Johnny someone... "Just Walkin' In The Rain"??? He had the perfect voice, for sounding sooooo unhappy. -grin-

"I like every single thing that comes with rain...." Me too! (except hurricanes and tornados of course) But "if" they didn't touch down or cause any damage... even these have their own fascination.

bj, you have a knack at hitting on exactly what makes a person feel warm and comfortable. You must have had a wonderful childhood.

What wonderful memories you have about rainy days. I, too, love rain. My sunroom has a roof that is different from the rest of the house and the rain hitting it sounds like it hitting a tin roof. Love that sound.

I remember the movie because I have it. It's great and I was already in my Sophomore year when it came out and looked for a boy that reminded me of Gene Kelly. However...he was not dancer BUT he could march like like crazy. Marine Corp after graduation. He was two years ahead of me..
When we get to heaven, and remember, I AM older than you, you will have to fight me for Gene! :)
Love,
Mona
Did you save me a cherry tart??? Hmmmmm??

I love your header! Do you really think there are people that haven't seen that movie? That just seems so wrong, doesn't it?

We have gone from being so terribly hot and dry, to a bit rainy and cool. We are actually going to be almost cold this weekend and we are heading north, where the forecast had the SNOW word in it. I'm digging out a coat and gloves and I don't even mind. I got so hot this summer that I can take a little cool for a change!

Judging from your wonderful stories, I think "baked goods" is your family's language of love. It's not too late to write a cookbook!
