Wholly Wheat !

Since we are now in PHASE 2 of the SOUTH BEACH DIET,
we can have a little bread...
whole wheat
multigrain.......
I made BISCUITS this morning with the whole wheat flour...

and.....since we can have a little fruit now, I bought this APRICOT SIMPLY FRUIT.

Now, I know it has natural sugar from the fruit but I decided
that it HAS to be more healthy than other jellies and jams....
am I right?
ANYWAY, a level teaspoon on a whole wheat biscuit
       IS MY NEW BEST FRIEND.

If I ate TWO biscuits and had 2 teaspoons of SIMPLY FRUIT,
every. single. morning
it would, indeed, make a difference in a weight loss, I guess,
but a little bit every now and then is bound to be ok.

******  I want to add here that I've gone down one size in my pants....but the most AWESOME thing is that MR. SWEET has lost a little over 25 lbs.
We are SOOO happy and proud and thankful.
It sure will do his heart good to be a little thinner.
I looked for CRACKED WHOLE WHEAT but I suppose
I will need to pick that up at a health food store.

I've really noticed that all the LOW FAT, SUGAR FREE
foods are more expensive than regular foods.

I guess it's the extra process they have to take to make them fat/sugar free that requires them to "up the price".

Even the sugar free ice cream is more expensive....but we love the fat/sugar free frozen yogurt. ONLY OCCASIONALLY, tho.
We try to leave off the luscious toppings as shown it the above photo....that's where a lot of calories come in, I would imaging....and, SHOOT....that's the best part. I don't care WHAT happens to the Earth....I ALWAYS get a couple of bright red cherries and a sprinkle of walnuts.....:)
The whole wheat flour is heavier, as you know....more dense than white flour
so the biscuits weren't light and fluffy
but they surely weren't bad.
I know I have whined and wined about this heavy, strong flour, but really,
it isn't as bad as I make it out to be.
In fact, we love the taste of the biscuits....light or not.
(playing in PhotoScape with the above pic.)
I've learned that we like the whole wheat BREADS...
not so much for the sweets, other than the Chocolate cake I made this week.
UPDATE...I have just been informed that if I use
whole wheat PASTRY flour, I might like it more.
I am pretty sure I WILL like it more since the first thought I had was....
PIE  CRUST....
O MY

WHOLE WHEAT BUTTERMILK BISCUITS

2 1/4 c. whole wheat flour
2 tbsp. bran
2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/3 c. butter *** (I used Brummel and Brown Yogurt...not too good,.....but...it's a biscuit.:(
3/4 c. buttermilk
Mix dry ingredients. Cut in butter. Add buttermilk and mix lightly. Roll out 3/4 inch thick. Cut biscuits and place on a greased cookie sheet. Bake 15 minutes at 425 degrees.
We ate just one biscuit this morning instead of me eating two
and Mr. Sweet having 3 or 4.
Cutting back on the amount of food is a huge part of losing weight....DUH !!
Watching WHAT you are eating is DARN HARD....but, ya gotta do it....
and doing a lot of walking will help, too.
We're too olden to do heavy exercise but walking is wonderful...
and we love it....in good weather.....not too hot....not too cold....JUST RIGHT. :)
Mr. Sweet and I walk on this track at the park...
1 mile every single day.
If you are dieting or simply watching your weight,
I want to CHEER  you on and wish
GOOD GOOD LUCK TO YOU.
It can be time consuming, just thinking of WHAT to make for meals
as well as preparing them.....
GOOD GRIEF, it seems I am either in the kitchen or the grocery store
ALL THE TIME .
I was standing in line at the grocery store the other day and picked up a
Milky Way candy bar, just to check the calories in it.

....OVER 300 calories in a small, delicious, luscious, Divine,
too. die. for., caramel, chocolate, delightful, what*dreams*are*made*of......

OOPS..... SORRY.....I forgot what I was going to write ......whew....
I musta had a Senior Craving Sweet Chocolate moment.......
ANYway......
It's the BUTTERMILK that makes a biscuit soooo good.
WELL......that and being baked in a CAST IRON SKILLET.

Oh we are on the low carb diet and it is hard to figure out what to eat. I have been counting carbs like mad, so far in 3 weeks about 3 1/2 lbs. Not that much, but hopefully I can get back to walking soon. Good for you two, you are doing great. Hugs, Marty

Wow down one size already. That is great. Men always lose faster. Not fair. I am watching what I eat too and walking over two miles a day. Feel better already in only one week.

You are doing great, both of you. My husband just lost 132 pounds...took him a year and no, he had no surgery. He is thinner than when we met...scarey, I told him, people are going to say, what is that tall thin guy doing with the short chubby girl!!

We substitute whole wheat flour in every recipe. I read somewhere one time that if you take away 2Tbl/cup of whole wheat flour called for in a recipe it will even out wheat flour being more dense. Also, if you buy a finely ground whole wheat flour instead of a stone ground gritty kind, the texture is more like AP flour.
Congrats on the weight loss so far!

My new asthma meds are making me gain weight, so I guess I need to start a diet-wish I could walk, but I live in the deep South and it is Hot even in the early morning, so I can't breath out there. Maybe I will try your South Beach-though like I say I am from the South and would rather do without a biscuit if it has to be whole wheat. LOL!

Oh I am so proud of both of you! You with your down-a-pant's-size and him, with his 25 pounds!!!!!!!!

WONDERFUL!

And wonderful, how you are digging right into all that this kind of a life style change entails. Even walking a mile a day. Wow! You are our Poster People For Guts and Strength of Will and most of all, for Improving Our Health.

And in the end, helping our health is the name of the game. Not everyone wants to try. But it seems wise, to do so.

YOU GO, GIRL!!!

Lots of gentle hugs...

Oh-I hear you, Bj. It does get easier though...and a lot of the cravings drop away. I am still off sugar and flour since 7/18 last year and feeling so much better...plus have dropped a lot of weight. I am choosing health instead of dessert!

Blessings to you- You can do this and I am so happy for your hubby! xo Diana

(Stay away from carrot cake and sausages, Sandy!)

Why is it all the good stuff has so many calories???? Sigh. Just not fair, I tell ya. Wouldn't it be so much better if chocolate had 0 calories??? hehe I'm so darn proud of you and Mr. Sweet, I know how hard it is to have to watch what you eat but so worth it in the end. Your biscuits look delish and like you, I've been turning to whole wheat breads instead of white breads. I love walking as well, it's a good way to exercise:-) xoxo

You and your husband are doing great! Eating healthy is so important but oh so hard to do. My neighbor is in the hospital now having had open heart surgery two days ago. He just wouldn't listen when his wife "nagged" him about his weight and eating habits. He is recovering nicely, thankfully. Bet he will listen from now on. Your biscuits look good to me especially with that fruit spread. I like that stuff. If you have any low fat recipes for grilling, BBQing or picnicking, be sure to add them to my party June 17-23. Take care.------ Shannon

Way to go you two. You've certainly stuck at it and it seems to be paying off.

I still don't know if I can be convinced about the healthy flour but your biscuits look pretty delish!

Good for both of you! When I was doing Atkins I used to have a square of Ghirdelli or Lindt dark chocolate (80%) with coffee. it has a piddling amount of calories and carbs, about 3 carbs to a square! and it's so rich it satisfies that craving.

Well, I think you're doing wonderfully! Kudos to both of you ~

Perhaps it will be a bit easier now with all the fresh fruits and veggies. I know there's sugar in fruits but hey, gotta have a little, right? :-)

You both should feel so proud! Great job :)

I noticed that your son (?) enjoys longboarding.....please tell him to always (!) wear a helmet. Our 13yr-old had a pretty bad longboarding accident and the helmet literally saved his life. The helmet was ruined, and he still has symptoms from his concussion a month later - but he was protected. Not to be lecturing anyone, just wanted to let you know :)
