THE STORY of a $1,000.00 shelf

May I quickly bring you up to speed here.....

I LOVE the COURTLY CHECK of MACKENZIE CHILDS, which is quite costly.
VERY expensive, really.
I have very few pieces......and I love them all...

I adore my large canister and the little covered
SUGAR BOWL.

The top thing on my BUCKET LIST is to get the small and medium canisters ....then the little creamer.
....and my darling 2 tier piece.
I love this piece TO THE MOON AND BACK.
I have used this pretty piece for so many things...
I first fell in love with this awesome tea kettle on another blog. I couldn't get it out of my mind
so.....one day, I just hauled off and BOUGHT IT.
I've never regretted it for a split second.
SOOOO, now that you KNOW I am forever in LUV...
it only stands to reason that I went into total
WHOLE BODY SHUTDOWN
when I saw this wall hanging coat rack from MACKENZIE CHILDS.
DAYUM, it's pretty !

$1,000.00
Yes, ma'am.....
ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS
OF COURSE, there is NO WAY I could.....or even WOULD, give that much money for a shelf, no matter how pretty....
"OOO, Mr. Sweeeeet...........
I know I have asked for MANY projects for you to build for me...and I can't, in all FAIRNESS, say that I will never, EVER ask for anything else in my entire life.....no, that I can't promise...but,
if you will build THIS for me, I'll wait a SOLID MONTH after you FINISH it before asking
for another single, solitary thing."
I PROMISE...!!!
(Mr. Blogger, pray tell WHY my font is so tiny all at once?)

THE BEGINNING......
It will take awhile before  we  he finishes it.
We're olden and don't move very fast...
and if we wake up one day and decide NOT TO WORK but watch movies and take naps,
we do it.
Oh, but it surely is going to be pretty and I can hardly wait for it...

It has a matching bench but that is beyond anything we can do at this time....
(would you believe this bench is around $4000.)

I just want this awesome shelf for my
ENTRY and it is gonna look just
SMASHING in there...

Oh I love Courtly Check...but really it is so pricey! How nice you have some pieces! The bench is gorgeous and the shelf as well...I would never pay $5,000 for them though...but will be excited to see how your project turns out! I'm sure it will be just as beautiful!!!

Wow, is your hubby really building the shelf for you? It is gorgeous, and the bench and yes, the teapot.
You have the beginnings of quite a pretty collection that means a lot to you.

Susie said...

BJ ,I just found your site. love it. I saw that teapot years ago in magazine and I have wanted it since. But OMG, if it's anywhere near the price of that shelf-ha- could never do that. You are wise to have your sweety do the shelf for you. I also have a wonderful handy man.hmmm?? Smiles to you,Susie(She Junks)

Kim @ Savvy Southern Style said...

I bet he does a fine job building that for you. Especially since you can't ask him to do anything else for a month!

i love your blog have been reading for ages but never get round to commenting..love your teapot when i first seen i went on a nad net search trying to find one..its adorable..so anyways i was thinking if you really wanted the bench you could purchase soemthing like this http://www.dealsdirect.com.au/p/outdoor-wooden-storage-bench/ and paint it similar to the fancy schmancy one,it would look adorable wit the shelf .

Four thousand dollars for a bench? I do not plan to spend that much for a new sofa. Yikes! Mr. Sweet is just like his darling wife who can make a good thing even better. Looking forward to the reveal in August or September. Anything sooner than that is just icing on the cake.

Well you will have a shelf just like that I am certain of it. I love it too.

I have been a fan of MC for years! Love the courtley check and so many other things they make but the prices. Oh my gosh! $1000 for a wood shelf!? Shouldn't it be inlaid with gold and a few rare stones for that price? Sheesh! The one Mr Sweet makes you will be worth 10 times that to you for the love that he puts into it:>)

Gert said...

Oh I love...love this! Your blog is so inspirational! I can't wait to see the shelf when he is all done...and then 'maybe' off to making that $4,000 bench! Sweet!

Blessings,
Gert

Oh, I can't wait to see it! That shelf is beautiful and I'm sure yours will be as well. My Aunt loves the MacKenzie Childs black & white check too.

The French Hutch said...

bj, I sure do count on you to open my eyes while the coffee is dripping. You have some lovely pieces of Mackenzie childs. I do know how expensive it is, that's why I only have one piece and that was a gift from my sweet sister. When I'm in Atlanta I usually find my way to the home dept. in Neiman Marcus where they have a little corner of all things MC. There use to be a company store in Atlanta but closed a few years back. They had great sales, sigh! The big pieces are very $$$ I love the little shelf and I know Mr Sweet will do a great job. Can't wait to see……….

Love it, Bj-and I can't wait to see it done. That looks like it is not going to be a really hard job at all...and you are lucky to have a willing and able hubby! It is going to be just darling. So...does the "one month I won't ask for anything" period start from the moment you SAW the piece or from the time he FINISHES the piece?;>) xo Diana

Love it!!! I wish I knew you wanted the creamer - they were only $15 or $18 at the Barn Sale - I can keep my eye out for you this summer, if you want! Love their new items in the catalog - and I want it all, too! Lucky you that your hubby is so clever!

Kathie Truitt said...

Oh BJ - I, too am head over heels in love with MacKenzie Childs. I almost hyperventilated when I went in the NYC flagship store - HEAVEN!! However, I found someone who can re-create that look and I am going to be blogging about it later in the summer. I'll give you a heads up!

A thousand dollars??? I am betting your hubbie's creation will be even better...and mean a whole lot more. I think both pieces are great...but really....has anyone told them there IS a recession out there??? Sometimes, I am just amazed! Can't wait to see the finish project, even if it takes 2 months!!

Judith @ Lavender Cottage said...

BJ, I have a feeling you are going to kiss that shelf every time you pass it by.
The kettle is unique and I'm happy you have it to match the other black and white checks from the set.
My kettle is shiny stainless steel and I love it even as I polish it to keep it shiny!

I'm a fan of Courtly Check too! All those pieces are crazy expensive. My husband bought me a teapot, creamer & sugar in blue when we sold our first house.

Love the shelf!

A thousand dollars you say? Hmmmm...just kidding, just kidding!!! LOL

Wsprsweetly Of Cottages said...

OMG!! Your Mr. Sweet is making that for you? It just sunk in!!!
*runs off in the opposite direction screaming for Patient Husband*

It will be even better than theirs! It will be bj beautiful!

Did I tell you about what happened when I went to the new MC shop that opened in town? After I collapsed at the prices? $38 for ONE napkin?

Anyway, if I didn't tell you I will !

I love it! You know, even if I had money, I cannot see paying $1K for a shelf. :/ So weird ~

Oh I can't wait to see this one! I don't own a single piece but I do love the stuff! You are so lucky he has the skill and the tools to make it for you. It will be perfect and probably made better than the "store bought" one!

Yes,this shelf needs to be yours. Jusst remind him how much he is saving. Don't you wonder why they price some things so high.
