GRITS

I had to come back and tell you all about the
FRIED GREEN TOMATOES we had the other night.

THEN....I PROMISE, no more green tomato posts...
or at least until I find some more GREEN TOMATOES. :))

I  used as little Canola oil as I could, got my skillet fairly hot, turned them often and fried until nice and golden.....
I was so hungry for one, I tried eating it too fast and it was H.O.T. and burned my mouth....
and, dayum, they were GOOD.
I am using a dish of RANCH DRESSING here because my sweet friend, SHELIA,
from NOTE SONGS says that is the way her tiny mouth likes FRIED GREEN TOMATOES.
I am not a huge fan of Ranch (Mr. Sweet would marry it if he could)
so if YOU know of something else used for a
FRIED GREEN TOMATO dip, would you kindly let me know?
Maybe something with a little LOUISIANA HOT SAUCE in it  ?
My tomatoes are already beginning to turn red....must hurry and make the others tomorrow.

The GREEN tomatoes are firm and slightly hard so they fry up nice and crisp.

The redness makes them much softer and, altho, they still taste heavenly, they are a little mushy when they have reddened and softened.

See the redness of that one slice...the breading has fallen off....and it is STILL going to be delicious.

Thus frying them while nice and green makes for a taste treat you won't forget.

I asked the veggie stock boy if he ever had GREEN tomatoes. He said, "O, yes, ma'am.....a lot of times, if you will look on the bottom of a display of bright red tomatoes, you will find a few green and partial green, waiting their turn to move to the top.....to ripen."
Sure 'nuff.....there they were, just waiting for me and my frying pan.
2 really green ones and a few partially greens.
He told me to put them in the fridge to slow down ripening....
what a smart fella he is.  My grocery store should feel very proud to have him in their employ.

O, these are sooo YUMMY, people.
It's the little things in life like Fried Green tomatoes that makes it all worth while. :))

I used ONION RING MIX to coat these luscious slices of tomatoes
and it was PERFECT. The best taste and so easy. Just a little of the mix and a little
water to make a nice paste and you are good to go.
I will use it again.....just as soon as I come across more GREEN tomatoes.
...you know.......if I ever get to go to THE WHISTLE STOP CAFE
and they still have FRIED GREEN TOMATOES on their menu,
I surely will order some.
HOWEVER, if they have BARBECUE on the menu,
I do believe
I WILL PASS....!!  :>)

Biting into one of these delicious slices
sure makes one feel lucky to be from
THE SOUTH. :))

I've got the batter all ready for some more of these treats...
BUT.....I've watched that movie 3 times in 3 days....
and I'm tired of it. :)

Oh, yeah......and MR. SWEET
suggested I just ADD Louisiana Hot Sauce to my Ranch Dressing for dipping the
tomatoes in....
DUH !!
perfect....:)

Yes, good idea to pass on the barbecue at that particular restaurant. Ha! So you like Ranch with the hot sauce added...sounds as if you really had yourselves a Fried Green Tomato marathon!

I love fried green tomatoes! I usually make a remoulade sauce for ours because that is how we get them often in restaurants. I don't have one set recipe for the sauce but here is an easy one:

Ingredients
1 1/4 cups mayonnaise
1/4 cup mustard (Creole mustard if possible)
1 Tbsp sweet paprika
1-2 teaspoons Cajun or Creole seasoning
2 teaspoons prepared horseradish
1 teaspoon pickle juice (dill or sweet, your preference)
1 teaspoon hot sauce (preferably Tabasco)
1 large clove garlic, minced and smashed
Method
Mix all the ingredients together in a medium bowl. The remoulade is better if left for a few hours to let the flavors meld. Keep refrigerated.

Yield: Makes about 1 1/2 cups.

Usually I don't enjoy reading about food, but this post was such a "happy chat" I found that it wasn't so "threatening"! (I don't even like to read cook books - especially with glossy pictures!) Some great images there and interesting explanations!

Being a Yankee, I've never had FGT, but seeing the onion ring batter and the hot sauce IN Ranch dressing makes me want to try some.
I always have lots of green tomatoes in November, and just let them freeze on the vine, cause I am tired of tomatoes (outdoor work) by then.
You sure have a talent for taking anything and making it interesting. Always looking to see what you are going to talk about next!

I have to admit that I'm weird, but I really don't like tomatoes unless they are sweet or cooked.

See, when I was growing up, we had a hydrophonic greenhouse where we only grew tomotoes. What was on the table every day of my childhood for breakfast, lunch, and dinner? Well, maybe you can see why I soon grew sick of seeing them! Lots of good memories of that time of my life though!

My brother on the other hand LOVES fried green tomatoes. Our tomato growing days are long over, so nobody gets green tomatoes but maybe once a year at the most. Therefore, they are a real treat for him.

A restaurant I like serves fried green tomoatoes with grits (Yes I'm from the South)and country gravy with tasso so the gravy had a Cajun kick.

My guess is that's kick is what you like with the hot sauce!

Thank you for linking this to my party. I know there are people who have never tried fried green tomotoes, so they will love the recipe. Hope to see you again next week.

Ah yes, cayenne does add a spicy sparkle to any dip...the sliced tomatoes in green are astounding in look, and taste for sure. Hopefully they didn't get too cold during the photo shoot...

Your green tomatoes looks like they should look, and I know they taste heavenly because I love them, too.

I have to tell you that my husband and I visited the Whistlestop Cafe once. The food was absolutely HORRIBLE -- all of it, not just the tomatoes. Both the friend chicken and the green tomatoes were dripping grease, completely inedible! The place now is not at all like the movie. It is more like a cafeteria, a really bad one.

I have had them well-prepared in a number of other restaurants where they were served with various dips, including ranch. The remoulade that Sue has posted looks like what I have enjoyed the most with them.

we also love fried green tomatoes, they are also good dipped in pancake batter and fried!

Never had them! blushing! I wonder though if a Roumalade sauce would taste good with that? (I just googled it and saw a picture with fried tomatoes so must be it would be.) We have it with our shrimp sometimes. Good stuff!

Dayum! :):) Why don't things taste as good in California as they did down South!!
I used to make grits almost daily when I lived in the South..and when we retired to California..I stopped making them. I must have sinned when I did that because nothing has tasted quite as good since then!

Rita said...

Love reading you, but it will be a while before I get to see green tomatoes. I have to tell you I have never seen them served in my little corner. Please come back with this post in August when I can give it a try.
