I thought, "Whaaat....tomato soup with ORANGE.?"
DUH........!!!!!
I remembered there was such a thing as ORANGE TOMATOES.
I mean, that is the NAME of them.
There's lots more types of tomatoes than I ever knew about...I have always loved tomato soup...and tomatoes in general, IF they are homegrown.
Just take a look at these pretty ones...
AUNT RUBY'S GERMAN GREEN TOMATOES
Heirloom beefsteak variety from Ruby Arnold of Greeneville, Tennessee who passed away in 1997. Slightly flattened, 1 pound fruit that ripens to a pale greenish-yellow ("lime jello green") with a slight pink blush that extends to the inside. Superb, fruity sweet and slightly spicy taste.

FRIED GREEN TOMATOES are still my very favorite way to eat a tomato..
Ingredients
- 1 (6-oz.) pkg. fishfry coating
- 5 medium green tomatoes, cut into 1/4-inch slices
- (if we don't grow tomatoes, where do we get the GREEN ones??)
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup oil
- 1 tablespoon sea salt
- 2 eggs
Directions
- Place cornbread mix in shallow pan. Add tomato slices; turn to coat with mixture.
- In large skillet, heat oil and butter to 350°F. Fry tomato slices, a few at a time, until golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels.
- Salt to taste and serve with crumbled bacon, a parsley pesto or your favorite flavored aoili. (what the heck is aoili ?)

Dearest BJ,
That was nostalgic for me in a way to go back to the times that my Daddy still grew tomatoes in the greenhouses in The Netherlands. Yes, there are so many varieties out there and they will not stop creating new varieties for sure. Everybody loves tomatoes.
Great post with fun photos.
Love to you,
Mariette
I didn't realize there were so many varieties either. Thanks for the fried green tomato recipe, I've never tried that before!
hah, news to me...I am so weird with food that if it doesn't 'look' like it should I ain't eatin' it...but if you say so...love fried green tomatoes; on both accounts-the moveie and eating...
Really enjoyed this post; I remember it all.
Rita
bj, you are talking the talk today. I never met a tomato I didn't love. I am going to have to try this, I love the way you added toppings, looks good enough to have for breakfast, yep that's how much I love the big red, or in this post any color! Grew up with tomatoes for every meal in the summer. Even after my Dad was older he always had a row in the back yard.
You found my true love today, love those tomatoes!

Tomato soup with orange zest is amazing. I have a recipe that will make you want to try it. Though I would like to try an orange tomato too!
I visited the Whistle Stop Cafe last year during my "green themed" year. I also made fried green tomatoes for the first time. Did pretty well, too!
I will definitely be looking for that soup. My husband I love tomato soup. We usually do the creamy tomato with milk too but I'll do like you and try following the directions first.
Well, this is new to me! I have to try it! Looking at all those tomatoes, I started to think of all the neat soups you could make and recipes you could use them in!
I have made fried green tomatoes when it looked like my tomatoes would NEVER turn red. They are really good! Believe it or not, I have never seen the movie!!
XO,
Jane
I always use half water and half milk or, better yet, cream. I'll be looking for that can. Thanks for the recipe for fried tomatoes. I like the idea of using fish fry crumbs.
That movie has always been a favorite with me, especially the scene in the parking lot.
I love tomatoes, but do not like tomato soup. I do not eat much fried foods anymore since by heart problems a couple of years ago but oh how I used to loved green fried tomatoes. Have a blessed day. Madeline
Fried green tomatoes are the bomb! My grandma used to make them for me as a treat when I "pent the night" with her. I made some years ago and hooked the hubs! So good with sour cream! Yum! I did find some green tomatoes at the grocery store. Don't get them! I found them really bitter! Ugh, now I am craving fried green tomatoes! I always end up leaving here craving something!
I never knew there were so many different types of tomatoes either. That soup sounds really good. My favorite thing though, are those fried green tomatoes! I could make a meal out of them.
I just watched that movie the other day. I hadn't seen it in a few years. Lordy, I loved that Kathy Bates character! And Izzy...oh...Izzy!
I love fried green tomatoes, too. My mother used to make them. She always dredged them with a flour/egg mixture and I (think) sprinkled a tad of sugar on them before serving.
Well, now I really AM longing for summer harvest! xo Diana
I love Fried Green Tomatoes:
1. the food
2. the book (especially the book)
3. *and* the movie!!!
:D
I had never heard of that soup before your post....
Yes, my first thought too when seeing the picture was who would put oranges in tomato soup!
I would love to grow some heirloom tomatoes. I usually just buy little tomato plants at Lowe's and plant them.
LOVE fried green tomatoes!
BJ, your post is very colorful and pretty not even to mention how good the soup looks but I will be honest and tell you that I am one of those few folk who does not like tomatoes. What's ironic is that my family once grew hydroponic tomatoes in a greenhouse that held one thousand plants. We sold ripe tomatoes to local grocery stores like Kroger. I was not a very good pitch guy for them since I just couldn't eat fresh tomatoes of any kind. My family was not too happy with me about it! Hee hee. They are good for you and I know I'm in the minority. You left me a nice comment recently and in it said you didn't know about my party. In case you want to join in it's up until Thurs. Night. Would love you to come if you can. ------Shannon
Didn't see that you had already joined the party until after my comment was sent to you. Thank you very much for coming, I really appreciate it. Shannon
I must admit, I've heard of the varieties, because I have a garden each year and have tried most of them! Fried green tomatoes are awesome! The heirlooms are the best to try...Be sure to buy the "green tomato". Yes, it is ripened and still green! Very tasty! Have a great week! Hugs
I love tomatoes and this soup looks good. Congrats to the winner! Happy Orange soup??? hugs, Linda
I absolutely LOVE tomato soup...usually the thick Tomato Basil, but this looks wonderful, and I will definitely pick up a can or two! Happy 2012, BJ!!! Tanya
Hi sweet B.J...how are you? I have never seen that soup but I am going to look for it(i use milk too)Friend Green Tomatoes is my all time favorite movie but I have never tried them, would love to though! Take good care, lots of love Sea
We get so many tomatoes from our garden every summer, if you lived near me I would supply you with all the green ones you wanted! lol I love fried green tomatoes...as well as the movie by that name:-) I didn't even know there was such a thing as an Orange tomato or that they even made soup with it! Seeeee, you're not the only one who lives a sheltered life! lol I so love coming here, your posts are always so much fun. xoxo
Love that movie too. Surprised at those tomatoes that look like gourds or pumpkins...wow,who knew??
I love Campbells Tomato Basil soup in the squatty can with the brown lid. If you haven't tried it, you should...I think it is about as good as I have had....
Every hear of (or taste) the Mortgage Lifter tomato? If not, you're in for a treat!

I have never seen that here! Now I will have to look. I love tomato soup, but I won't eat a raw tomato!
Tomato soup was my daughter's favorite growing up and I always made her Campbell's Tomato with milk. Because of the resulting color, she would ask for "orange soup". We had requests for "orange soup" often in our house; still do!
My favorite fried green tomatoes are served at a local restaurant with a little spicy sauce and a shrimp on top. Yum!
BJ, I love tomato soup and every tomato variety that I have ever grown! I recently had a spicy tomato soup in a bistro, and they served it topped with popcorn. It was fantastic.
OMG Patti won! How cool!
BJ...You'll have to tell us the difference between this and the regular tomato soup.
I always put a little cayenne pepper in my coating for fried green tomatoes.
Balisha
Yum, yum, yum. I can't think of many things I would rather have than a delicious homegrown tomato. Absolute bliss.
Have you ever put a fried green tomato on your burger? We have a restaurant here that features a burger with fried green tomato, an egg and pimiento cheese. Goodness gracious, it is delicious. and, it is so filling that you don't need to eat anything else the entire day. I guess I need to do a post about it one day.
I love fried green tomatoes. It is hard to find green ones to cook with around here, but I order them all the time in the south. I haven't seen that soup (I add milk too) but I may look for it. I don't really like canned soup often, but I do like tomato with a grilled cheese sometimes. Funny thing is it makes both of us think of our mothers...must have been the lunch of choice back
in the 60's.
At first I thought...YUCK! But then when you mentioned the different colors of tomatoes, it made more sense. I bet the soup tasted really good. The lighter colored tomatoes are supposed to be less acidic too, I think. Might have to look for that can of soup at my store.
Congrats to Patty for winning the orange bag!
Really? Now, I know thank's for the heads up")
Visiting for RT 2! Here's my share- hope you can stop by:)
