My Silly Mama

I saw this LUSCIOUS
HOMEMADE FROM SCRATCH
GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE
made by CATHY
and just the words
"MADE FROM SCRATCH" linked with GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE
sent me into memory mode and laughing my self silly...
...let me explain...
When Mr. Sweet and I married over 50 years ago,
his very favorite cake in the whole entire universe was
GERMAN CHOCOLATE..
..net..
He also thought NO one in the whole entire universe
could make one like SHE did.
OF COURSE,
I wanted to learn to make one JUST AS GOOD AS HERS,
so we went to her house one day and I said,
"Mama, will you teach me to make a German Chocolate Cake like you..
FROM SCRATCH.?"
"He says NO one makes them as good as you because you
MAKE THEM FROM SCRATCH..."
Her recipe is exactly the same
AS THIS ONE.

Of course, being the GOOD MAMA that she was,
she took me by the hand...
into her warm and safe KITCHEN
and she TOLD me every step..
but made me do all the work...*so's I'd learn, ya know...
She had me to be sure and measure JUST right..
"Jeanie, sit your measuring cup ON THE COUNTER so that you
get EXACTLY the right amount...."
"...yes, ma'am..."

We dipped and measured,
we giggled and measured again..
I added the eggs and I added the milk...

I said, " Boy, no WONDER your cakes are so good, Mama. We've been at this over an hour."

She smiled sweetly and had me slide the 3 cake pans into the JUST RIGHT TEMP oven.
After the cake was all finished...♥....delicious icing..
I was so so proud !

THEN...she took me by the hand..
opened her pantry..
and there, IN PLAIN SIGHT..

Again, she smiled sweetly and said..
"OH, and THIS is what I use MOST of the time...such a time saver !"
WELL...
KNOCK ME OVER WITH A FEATHER...!!
I could NOT believe it...
"Why, you rascal, you...!!"

"BUT"...she said, "I ALWAYS make my  homemade ICING!.."

50 years later, Mr. Sweet and I still laugh about this...
When I make him a
GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE,
he always wants to know if it's
MADE FROM SCRATCH
or did I use the
TIME SAVER...??!!
.....AND, I'M NOT TELLIN'
XOXOXO

That's my favorite time-saver, too! But there is NO substitute for homemade frosting! I am SUPPOSED to have a German chocolate cake for my birthday every year, but it didn't happen yesterday. I will make one for myself before the week is out ;-)

So funny and a cute story. My husband said his favorite cake was German chocolate, too, but for some reason he doesn't seem to care for it anymore.

I have been trying to run my finger through that icing dripping off the side and I get nothing! I want to know where the recipes are though! I love German Chocolate. It was about the only cake that my mother made. Of course, she used the time saver! Love the story! What a "sweet" memory!

Thanks for sharing this fun... and tasty story at ON THE MENU MONDAY!

As a consumer of said cake, I do not want to know the bakers secret. Really! If I may, please serve with a stout cup of coffee and I am satisfied!

German's Chocolate Cake is my all time favorite, too. When I was growing up, my mother used to bake one for my birthday every year.

And, I am not a frosting person, but that made from scratch frosting is luscious.

Big smiles and giggles here! This looks beautiful and delicious. German Chocolate is the cake of choice for "the chef" here. ;-) I'm going to remember this little secret.

That is awesome! I figure that if someone has to ask if it's made from scratch, it's not worth the time!

I must admit, my homemade German chocolate cake frosting is better than the store bought.

Beautiful cake! I've never eaten a German Chocolate Cake, but you've inspired me. Now I have to try it :)

Cathy at Wives with Knives said...

Hi BJ - I love your post about your MIL! I have to confess I've used the box mix too. As long as the frosting is from scratch nobody cares that much. We could eat the frosting on a graham cracker and be happy. From scratch cake is saved for very special occasions. Thanks so much for the link to my blog. Your post really brightened my day.

Oh, BJ, that was too funny! My mom is the same way, so many times I think she slaved over the stove and all the time she used one of them "time savers"! lol I've never had German Chocolate Cake but I've seen the cake mixes in the stores so will have to buy one to try. I have no idea why I've never had it before? *shrugs shoulders* It really does look delicious. xoxo

You took ME down memory lane, as well, Miss BJ! When I was growing up, each member of my family of seven had their favorite dessert. My precious mother would rotate the desserts, so everyone had a chance for their favorite to be on the menu every month or so. German chocolate cake was "#2 sister's" favorite.

Blessings,
