Screened In Sleeping Porch

When I was a little girl in the 40's, my daddy lived in Dallas.
This was before air conditioners...or at least before any of US had an air conditioner.
Daddy lived with my Aunt Myrt and Uncle Lawrence..
(my mom and dad divorced when i was little and i spent parts of the summer with him)
and he slept on a screened in porch.
I would spend about a week in the summer with him and I thought
sleeping in a screened-in porch was just about the most INCREDIBLE thing.
Aunt Myrt's porch wasn't as pretty as the photos I found on the Net...
but it was a MAGICAL place to me.
I really doubt that it was all that much COOLER out there...
but I didn't care.
Another thing I remember about this time in my life...
my dad gave me a MICKEY MOUSE WATCH
one summer.
...wish I still had it. *sign
BACK  home, to sort of visually make things cooler in the summer,
my mother always switched out our bedding
as soon as the temps got high..
and I always do the same thing...
I love my winter time reds and yellows...
and my red and white QUILT is one of my favorite things in the whole cottage.
But, by HOT summer,
I AM READY FOR A CHANGE.
Purplish blues, touches of pale yellow on a crisp, white background..
love it...
I put my RED quilt away for the summer and bring out my
Waverly SWEET VIOLETS bedding and,
I SWEAR the room temp falls 20 degrees.
I adore the blues and faded yellow of this set...
and I REALLY love the floral with the plaid.
.....yep....I do...
I just love it.
...the little violets are sweet...
and the cotton sheets are crisp and cool....ummmm
Waverly discontinued this summery pattern several years ago..
I haven't looked lately but I'll bet they have other pretty ones.
I am such a sucker for pretty bedding...
am longing for pure solid white...
 Pull those covers back and
let's have
BREAKFAST IN BED...
I will be serving breakfast on my
vintage wicker bed tray...
is that what it's called..??..bed tray?
Doesn't sound right.
Bed......????
A cup of good strong, SWEET tea...
and some delicious STRAWBERRY ALMOND LOAF..

It is so so good served with some of that fresh tasting
STRAWBERRY JAM
I made last month..
FREEZER JAM and it does stay tasting like FRESH FRUIT.
The *recipe* is on the Freezer Jam Pectin box.
Maybe you can drift back off to sleep...
your tummy is full...
no alarms are set...
the house is quite...
AND VERY COOL.
OOO, yes..
ONE is warm and the other is definitely  KOOL.....
Awwww.  come on...let's have
JUST ONE MORE PIECE of this....
....it's sooo good.

I have always wanted a screened sleeping porch! I want mine on the second floor so I don't have to worry about bears coming in!

Your summer bedding is very refreshing...

Ahh--love your post. What I wouldn't give for a screened in porch even out back of the house! Your violet bedding is beautiful.

When I was a child my best girlfriend had a sleeping porch. It was on the second floor. It was nothing more than a ticking mattress on the floor, but boy did we have fun out there.

Hi my sweet Texas friend...

Ohhh...I think it would be heavenly to have a sleeping porch! I have never had one...nor have I had the opportunity to sleep in one! Awww! I sure enjoyed your sweet story about staying with your dad during the summer and getting to stay out on your Aunt's porch! Such sweet memories!

Well dear friend, I really do love your creamy yellow and rich reds...your winter linens but the summer bedding is just as sweet! The lavenders/purples with the yellow on crisp white...sooo summery! I agree...it DOES look cooler! Hehe! It's one of the things that I always look foward to...changing out my bed linens for the season! A change is always nice! Thanks for sharing your pretty summery linens with us today, dear friend!

Warmest summery wishes,
Chari

Since you can create such atmosphere in a blog post, I can only imagine what it is like for those who actually walk through your door. Thank you! So sweet!

Wouldn't a sleeping porch be wonderful? My father in law is
77. He still talks about his years at The University of Texas. I guess he lived at a boarding house and slept on the sleeping porch. He remembers it fondly. :)

Your summer bedding is so pretty. Sleeping porches remind me of some of the sorority houses at the University of Alabama!

Oh don't those sleeping porches look divine!? I would love a screened deck off the master bedroom, maybe with one of those beds suspended from the beadboard ceiling that gently sways you to sleep to the sound of peepers and crickets.
Your violet bedding is so pretty and it really does look cooler. I always have crisp white sheets on my bed, 'cause that's what grandma had at the farm and I always remember how wonderful they felt in all their line dried smoothness.

Your room is gorgeous. I take off my heavy comforter and just have a light quilt on our bed right now. I would love some white sheets with ruffles!
My grandma did not have a screened in porch..but they would open the bedroom windows and her priscilla curtains would blow lightly during the night. Sometimes I catch a smell of that night air and it takes me right back to those evenings at grandmas.

Lucky you, to have had the experience of sleeping on a screened in porch! My husband did, in one of the homes he lived in, growing up. It sounds delicious.

Whether it was cooler or not... The difference make it special.

Gentle hugs,

I could never have breakfast in bed. That is just not my style. Too country and old fashion. We had screened porches as well. Had to keep the mosquitoes out. I loved it when I could raise a window and get the cool fresh sir. No more of that.

BJ, I can't say I've had the pleasure of sleeping on a sleeping porch. It sounds so lovely. What I DO remember is Daddy tying strips of cloth soaked in citronella to to the bed posts to keep away the mosquitos in my bedroom and we actually had screens. :) Yours sounds much more inviting and with a delicious breakfast as a treat.
How lovely,
Babs

I love the idea of sleeping out on a screened-in porch. What lovely memories you must have.
I like the idea of changing the bedding with the seasons - I have a Christmas set, and love to put it on.

When I was a little girl, we lived in a very old house that had a screened in porch and we loved getting to occasionally sleep out there -- great memories :)

Love all the photos :)

What memories this brought back. We didn't have a screened in porch where I grew up, but we had a porch with a glider that I adored, and sometimes took a nap out there. I wanted to much to SLEEP out there but wasn't allowed:( I love your summer bedding too. I changed out our bedding for the summer too and LOVE it! I may have to get NEW winter bedding too now:) Great post, you made me HUNGRY. XO, Pinky

What a great idea. I've been trying to find something that would be appropriate all year --- guess my first mistake was ever trying to be "appropriate"! I'm going to summer it up just as soon as life settles down. Meanwhile, I've just joined your followers (no. 221) and expect to return many times in the future. from Sugar at http://theothermeissane.blogspot.com

BJ,
I know what you mean about sleeping in the summer w/o air. I did that till I was 11. A sleeping porch sounds marvelous! What a neat idea. It was so hot I remember not using sheets even. Love your summery bedding and of course your strawberry almond loaf, yum! Thanks for linking it up to Home Sweet Home!

I've always wished for a screened sleeping porch. I think they are wonderful and it would be something so special to wake in the 'outside' on summer mornings.

I love your summer bedding. Now I realize the changes I've been thinking of making in my bedroom could be done with the seasons!
