A QUILT OF MANY COLORS...

plezzzzzzzz let me say that
I am NOT a quilt maker in ANY sense of the word.
I don't even PRETEND that I know the first thing about
making QUILTS.
I don't even know how to sew and that's a fact !
My mom was the BEST quilt maker, ever.
And, do you think I took the TIME back then, to
WATCH and LEARN ?
SHOOT NO !
bwaaaaaaaaaaa
I must have been crazy....
I was bound and determined to make at LEAST,
a simple
9 PATCH
and learned, in the process, that
COLOR...
PATTERN...
NEATNESS OF SEWING
plays an AWESOME role in the construction of a
SIMPLE QUILT and how it looks in the end.
COLOR and PATTERN of the fabric can make a simple quilt look FABULOUS
or a little on the dowdy-looking side.
I was looking for a CUTE fabric.
COLORFUL
INTERESTING
SOMEthing that would take my
PLAIN and SIMPLE QUILT
to another level....
If the fabric is awesome...
and cute..
and softly bright...
you can end up with a pretty cute quilt that you can be proud of.
...I didn't want just the 'run of the mill'
SIMPLE 9 PATCH..
no sir....I WANTED CUTENESS...
I had to have some kind of KILLER fabric..
a light, airy, FUN fabric.
hmmmmmmm??
DEBBIE MUM !
YES !
Sooo, I bought a few yards of HER fabric,
found some in the thrift bin at the fabric store.
Used a little of other fabrics I already had
and started
CUTTING SQUARES...
lots and lots of SQUARES.
I also learned that the BACK of a quilt is just almost
as pretty as the front.
All squares and puffy looking and....
sooo fluffy-cloud SOFT....just full of yummyness.....ummmmm

Now, you REAL QUILT MAKERS out there..
please don't look too closely.
It was HARD...HARD, I TELL YOU....
to get all those little tiny squares
all lined up with each other.
MERCY !!
You know, this has a light weight batting and yet it is so warm.
Mr. Sweet just loves sleeping under it..warm but not heavy.
*
Some 9 PATCH quilts have a SOLID square in the middle of each nine.
Some quilts are made with the SAME center color...
while others have a variety of solid colors.
I am so haphazard, I had about 5 million nine patches sewen together before
realizing that I might have liked a solid color in the middle.
Oh, well...I MIGHT (and I might NOT) make another someday
and I'll try to remember that solid square.
OOO..
and don't think, in all my
DEBBIE MUM
Quilt Love,
that I forgot to have something to serve you.
NO SIR REE BOB...
You know I do you more than that !

Do U love
POWDERED SUGAR DONUTS
as much as I do?
Have a seat, eat a donut and
LET'S TALK ABOUT IT.
I am linking with
3 OR MORE TUESDAY ..because I had WAAAY more than 3 squares in this quilt :))
My thanks to the hosts and
thanks to you for stopping by.
I hope you will check out a few of these memes..
You'll be so glad you did.
*NOTE
I must tell you that I ended up making 10 quilts in one year....
one for each of my grands.
NOW, I would like to make them all a much prettier one but...
JUST IN CASE I DON'T
GET 'ER DONE,
they DO have one to remember me by. :)

Hey BJ, I actually wish I could quilt and I probably could if I'd just sit down and do it because I can sew pretty decent. I guess I just don't have the desire or the will to reallylearn and do anything with it.

And YES, Love powdered sugar donuts; yuummmm.....

BJ, I love your quilt!!! I love that fabric with the little houses and trees. Someone sent me a small piece of that fabric and I wondered who the maker was? Is it Debbie Mumm too??

Great job on your quilt....it looks perfect to me!!

Great post for national quilting day which happens to be today!!!

I am new to the quilting game and to me your quilt looks great. I agree, it's hard to match up those squares and I have the hardest time sewing a straight line. Maybe with practice I can get as good as you are.

the 9-patch is a great place to start quilting. Keep going and you can become as good as your mother...or at least you can make things to keep everyone warm.

10 quilts in one year, and that from one who doesn't sew. Now that is amazing, BJ. Very impressive indeed!
Your quilt is full of happiness. Thanks for sharing it, And, yes, I do love powdered sugar donuts. ;-)

Well bj, your quilt impresses me. I know a little about quilting but I want to know more. Your quilt is so sweet with the 9 patch square. I think it is silly to have a plain center. Your fabrics are FUN and pretty. Just what you wanted. Good job my dear sister friend.

Will you pass me a donut please and the violet dish too. I love it!
Love you too. Jeanne xo

Lovin' your quilt BJ! Believe it or not I actually pulled fabric out of the closet yesterday to work on one! Mine will be a lot smaller, and more of the "crazy quilt" style (try to figure:@) But very colorful and cheery, just like yours-enjoy!

Ohhhhhhhh, pretty new blog look here! Yes, I always notice new blog looks, and wait a sec, to make sure they fully load. 'Course with this one of yours, it needs no wait-to-load-time, but... It's just that I do.

This look is so lovely and simple and calm and Spring-like. Grrreat! :-)

I am now the *Queen Of Noticing New Blog Looks*!

Which is better than being the *Queen Of Grumpy,* which I was, too much of the time, in the past. ,-)

My mother was an accomplished seamstress and made quilts for all of her children and grandchildren. You've inspired me to pull mine out and enjoy it. Now to figure out where it is???

BJ, You are too hard on yourself... this darling and over the top quilt is a real masterpiece.

YOur fabric choices work perfectly. I did try hand quilting, and it is so difficult. So I know what a labor of love this is.

The little "love" square is my favorite. I sure your quilt of many colors will go from a new item to an heirloom. What a gift to those after you too.

Thanks for the donut... when I licked the screen I almost tasted the powdered sugar.

Sweet post, BJ.

I have patched together nine patch and bowtie for small projects, like pillows and a swing cushion, but never have I done a quilt.

Happy Spring! We are at the lake and today the sun is shining brightly! Love it!

Your quilt is LOVELY!
I am working on a BIG Quilt Project. Im at the cutting of material stage. I am cutting up my daughters precious baby clothes and then turning them into squares, then making three simple Christmas Tree skirts out of them (one for each daughter, & one for me). It will take me forever!
I have NEVER quilted before nor really sew...other than little tiny projects a while back when the girls were small. Mostly Halloween costumes, and PJ's.
Anyway~ I hope I can get this done the way I envision!
ps~ LOVE powder doughnuts!

What a wonderful quilt. It's really all the more impressive because you didn't have your mother's help...probably have some of the quilting genes, though. It sounds so cozy, too. (Same story here as concerns quilting. I never paid a lick of attention to what my mother was up to. Big mistake. Now I'm learning from scratch and I'd so like to ask her a few questions.)

Gorgeous quilt BJ! We all have to start somewhere. My quilts are far from perfect but I'm a beginner too. I am still in the process of cutting out the squares for a nine patch and seeing yours gives me some ideas. I love the white sashing around your squares!

Debbie Mumm fabrics are so much fun ... and I love powdered sugar donuts!

Debbie said...

I made a 9 patch once.

Not a 9 patch quilt, just a 9 patch. Period. It was in 4-H years ago. Mine looked dreadful. I never got beyond that.

Now that I'm older, I look at quilts and want to try to attempt it again. We'll see...

In the meantime, I enjoy looking at beautiful ones, and I think yours fits the bill. It's whimsical and colorful, and I love it.

I'm so impressed that you made one for each grandchild. Maybe by the time I have a grandchild, I'll be making quilts.

wow! So pretty! It is amazing, BJ -- I do know how to sew, but quilting is hard, hard, hard -- just as you said. I tried nine patch just for some placemats, and they looked kind of like a dishrag when I was done. lol, but it was fun trying!

I couldn't sew a thing, certainly not a quilt. Yet, this was not designed for warmth (although it could) - it is a work of art. Perhaps each patch tells a story about one facet of your life. So a sort of history, a life's journey is what we see. Lovely work, beautiful art...

Grandpa was quite a guy, larger than life. He's been gone since 1981, yet the hard working guy from West Virginia has impressed upon me the lessons of hard work and perseverance. I am happy to be named for him!
