We've ALL had 'em...right ?
I was WAAAY too distraught to even THINK
of wanting a photo!!
♥♥♥
Has THIS ever happened to you?
You make the same cake 10 times to have for your family and they all turn out perfect...
OK...NEARLY perfect...
But, when you want to TAKE one somewhere...or you have LOTS of company coming...
that same cake just FALLS APART !
I was having 15 to 20 people coming for HOME FELLOWSHIP DINNER
and I wanted to make a really good dessert.
Other ladies were bringing desserts, too
*
When I took my cake out of the oven, first off...
IT STUCK...
*
but...it was a BUNDT cake so I let it cool and turned it over,
with the crumbled part on the bottom...
COVER IT UP with icing...right ?
I got it all frosted and was about to carry it to the dining room
when all h*** broke loose and
it split right down the middle...
half fell on the floor.
on the floor, folks..!!
You talk about stress...
I was crying and pitching a HISSY FIT ....ready to DUMP the rest of the cake
when I thought...
"IF LIFE HANDS YOU A BROKEN CAKE,
MAKE A TRIFLE"
(and besides, MR. SWEET was looking at me as if he was
beginning to wonder WHY he has stayed with me for over 50 years..)
...sooo...
I made a trifle...
just crumbled that remaining cake into a pretty VINTAGE bowl that belonged to my mom,
icing, toasted coconut, pecans and all...
I made a French Vanilla pudding, poured it over the entire thing...
stuck it in the fridge so that when it was served, it was cold .
*
...after a bit, I added more toasted coconut and pecans on top...
and, believe it or not,
everyone just loved it...they ate almost all of it so I
know they weren't just trying to be nice.
Actually, it WAS pretty good.
*
We had 2 Lemon pies and homemade SNICKERDOODLES...
and a huge pot of
DUNKIN DONUTS coffee...
which was a GOOD thing since my TRIFLE was only half
as large as it should have been !!

AIN'T LIFE GRAND !!

Now that is CREATIVE! I love how you turn a disaster into something so yummy. The presentation is also excellent in your mother's pretty bowl. Not so sure I would have handled this nearly as well. I bet your Mr. was quite impressed. :)
ReplyDelete~Donna
You are quick thinking. Yum! :-)
ReplyDeleteNice and creative idea, mmm...I lake it!:)
ReplyDeleteWow you're a creative genius! It looked delicious, not to mention displayed beautiful and I bet no one knew it wasn't intended that way!
ReplyDeleteDenise
Girlie...you have made lemonade from lemons :)
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Gail

Just the way God does us, he takes all our brokeness, add his love and sweet grace the makes us better than we were before.
ReplyDeleteThings always workout for the best in the end... with just a litte stress inbetween. Have faith in everything you do.
IT looks yummy!!
That is best looking and most tasty looking "train wreck" I have ever seen! I could almost feel your frustration. I just wonder though, if there was a hissy fit competition who would have won, me or you! I know I would have been bouncing off of the walls. But you win for sure because I would have never thought about making a trifle! LOL
ReplyDeleteHugs, Sue
Oh you are so clever!!!!!!!!!! I'd just have had a melt-down, and never figured out a way to salvage it. :-)
ReplyDeleteBJ, this made me laugh! You know the saying, when life hands you lemons... I think my new saying will be when life hands you a messed up cake, make trifle!
ReplyDeleteHow clever!!! I would have been in tears and I KNOW I would have thrown it all out and gone and bought a dessert:):) I bet your trifle was even better than the cake you had planned!!!! Isn't it great!!!! I also LOVE your beautiful Mother's bowl! Thanks for showing us that we are ALL human and we all have disasters in the kitchen!!!! XO, Pinky
ReplyDeleteNice "save" BJ! I'm sure everyone loved it and had a great time:@)
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid I would probably have chucked it and run to pick up a ready made. No, I would have probably already bought the ready made....lol....you did a great job. It looked beautiful.
ReplyDeleteBJ,
ReplyDeleteYou're a HOOT! Here all this time I thought I'd been watching "the MRS. MARTHA" of foodies. . .and you dropped a cake on the floor! My heart sank for you! I've had 'em stick before, but never crumble. (Blame it on the weather. . .barametic pressure or something!)
I was eating my breakfast this morning thinking, I should take a photo of this like BJ does. Didn't happen. You see at our house once the food is done, it's time to eat. No time to take pictures. My breakfast? I ate it! It was good!
So glad your cake had a happy ending.I 'm thinking, you'll always be "MRS.MARTHA" in my eyes!
Fondly,
Pat
Oh you did just the right thing! Trifles are so delicious. (Unfortunately, I have plenty of experience with crumbled cakes.) I'm so sorry that you had a double letdown with yours. LOL!
ReplyDeleteI have one question: was it one of those fancy Bundt cake pans? They have some very specific and fussy directions. My last one totally flopped.
The sign of a true genius is making trifle out of broken cake. I don't know why you would get upset, you had it handled all along:>) I'd eat that!
ReplyDeleteClever gal! & it looks deelish! What a beautfiul way to present your cake ...
ReplyDeleteHave a beautiful weekend ~
TTFN ~
Marydon
You did good! You took a lemon and made lemonaid!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I started reading, I knew it was going to turn out great! You have a way with food:) Looks and sounds delicious! Have a blessed evening! HUGS!
ReplyDeleteAs I was reading I was thinking, make trifle! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat save BJ!! Julia Childs would be proud of you. She always said not to admit to a mistake. If your cake breaks just recreate it....it looks delicious!!!

I have had mor ethan my fair share of train wrecks in the kitchen! They occir daily here! *laugh*
ReplyDeleteBut look at you! You saved the day so creatively! You amazing lady you!
Love,
Sue
BJ, I have to give you credit for your positive attitude. If that had happened to me, I would have tossed it the garbage! No trifle!
ReplyDeleteYou go girl... and you KNOW why Mr. Sweet has stayed with you for over 50 years. Because you are the BEST!
Justine :o )
You did an amazing job, BJ...I am in awe of you!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
You, wonderful, you! I love your (kind of) trifle cake!!! Once the cat was eating on my sheet cake. Hmmmmm, what to do??? It just a little icing off the corner. Yip, smeared some new icing on there and served from the other side and good as new, lol. That was many years ago. I think we all lived through it!
ReplyDeletexoxo
You are so clever, BJ. This turned out so beautiful and looks really good too....Christine
ReplyDeleteI was shouting 'make a trifle' into the computer. You were already there!
ReplyDeleteA friday's favorite for sure :-)
Nice recovery, BJ! Not only did your dessert taste good (according to all those who ate it), it LOOKED spectacular. Presentation...as one of my tablescape students said,
ReplyDeleteFood tastes better when it is presented in a pretty fashion."
Jane (artfully graced)
BJ, you crack me up with your wonderful sense of humor & outlook on life! Thanks for starting my day off with a smile.
ReplyDeleteMy sisters are coming today & I've purchased Dunkin' Donuts coffee to serve. It is a favorite of the youngest.
Also wanted to let you know I'm strongly thinking of re-doing my guest bedroom in the black & whites toile & checks that you have used. I just LOVE that room!! I must go find that post & take some notes. Thanks so much for the inspiration, Honey.
big hugs from Ohio to TX,
Rett
p.s. GREAT idea to make truffle like that. Taking notes on that idea, too. :-)
This is the ultimate save! I love trifle so I would have been one of the ones gobbling it up.
ReplyDeleteThat happened to me once, and it was a birthday cake. I've never heard of birthday trifle so even if I had THOUGHT to do it (which I wouldn't have) I'm not sure where I would have stuck the candles.
My solution was to cry.
My husband's solution was to run to the grocery store and get a bakery cake.
Hi lovely Texas lady. You have some Great Dessert like your Trifil cake I need to make this for my Husband ~~~~Thanks so much for your lovely comments about my Tablescapes and becoming one of my followers !!!~~~I hope you have a Great Day with your family !!!
ReplyDeleteIt is 45 down in League City, Texas. Keep warm !!! Diane
Looks yummy to me. I would love some with a cup of coffee right now.♥
ReplyDeleteOkay, that just looks sinful to this girl who's busy 'nutri-system-ing' it for the new year. I hate you (not really)
ReplyDeletebj you always have such cheerful and entertaining posts! This was a wonderful idea! My sister-in-law makes yummy trifles all the time and I love them, but I never make them myself. Now I know what to do when I have a cake disaster!
ReplyDeleteLove it! :)
ReplyDeleteI am laughing so hard just picturing all that. Now I wouldn't have thought to turn a ruined cake into something else. I probably would have just thrown the whole thing out...or eaten it all myself!
ReplyDeleteLife is grand ~ and so are you! I just love your pluck!!
ReplyDeleteLove,
Susan and Bentley
xxoo
When life hands you lemons, make lemon trifle! I love how you made something great out of a stressful situation. And I absolutely adore trifle so I would have been in dessert heaven!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for linking up and have a great weekend!
Now that is one train wreck I would love to copy!! Wow! BJ you could turn a mud pie into a red velvet cake :))
ReplyDeleteThis train wreck sounds like it was very tasty...looked awfully good. Trish
ReplyDeleteLOL...such a great idea! It's always nice to think outside the box.
ReplyDeleteI'm having the very first GIVEAWAY on my blog. Please stop by to submit your entry. Good Luck! http://utry.it/2011/01/happy-birthday-to-meand-very-first.html#comments
Hi BJ, I loved your story about the cake....I must tell you what happened to me at Christmas. I had 26 family for lunch on Boxing Day when I decided to stun them all with a chocolate fountain. I had all the yummy things to dip into the choc(marshmallows, strawberries etc)and all was looking good when suddenly the fountain became off balance and flung(yes, flung!!) melted chocolate everywhere!! It was something like you'd see in the movies!! We still enjoyed the treats though, we just didn't have to dip them in as they were already covered!
ReplyDeleteSuzy
BJ, That's called making lemonade from lemons - you did well! Your trifle is really beautiful in your vintage crystal bowl.
ReplyDeleteBlessings and hugs, Beth
I was thinking trifle as soon as I saw the first photo. Great save. I have had so many food and craft fails.
