A MISSISSIPPI MAGNOLIA

May I present to you a Mississippi Magnolia.... PATRICIA NEELY-DORSEY...
***
Patricia Neely Dorsey's Reflections of a Mississippi Magnolia-A Life in Poems is "a true celebration of the south and things southern." The author states , "There are so many negative connotations associated with Mississippi and the south in general. In my book, using childhood memories, personal thoughts and dreams, I attempt to give a positive glimpse into the southern way of life. In my book I try to show that there is much more to Mississippi and the south than all of the negatives usually portrayed . I invite readers to Meet Mississippi (and the south) Through Poetry ,Prose and The Written Word."

SOUTHERN LIFE
*
If you want a glimpse of Southern life, Come close and walk with me;
I'll tell you all the simple things, That you are sure to see.
You'll see mockingbirds and bumblebees, Magnolia blossoms and dogwood trees,
Caterpillars on the step, Wooden porches cleanly swept;
Watermelons on the vine, Strong majestic Georgia pines;
Rocking chairs and front yard swings, June bugs flying on a string;
Turnip greens and hot cornbread, Coleslaw and barbecue;
Fried okra, fried corn, fried green tomatoes, Fried pies and pickles too.
There's ice cold tea that's syrupy sweet, And cool, green grass beneath your feet;
Catfish nipping in the lake, And fresh young boys on the make.
You'll see all these things And much, much more, In a way of life that I adore.

Just reading this poem brings so many southern memories back to me...fishing with my daddy for catfish....fried okra, black-eyed peas and cornbread...the best pimiento cheese sandwiches in the whole world...sitting on the crank ice cream freezer, atop a quilt, on my aunt's front porch...lightening bugs and chiggers...watermelon gardens where the melons were kept in an ice-filled box and sold by the slice........*sigh.....My nickname or "handle" when I first started playing around with a computer was GRITS.....Girl Raised In The South...:O) bj

Though I've not had the pleasure of reading this book of prose, I am really looking forward to receiving my copy.
If you like southern and if you like poetry, I am pretty sure you are going to love this book. I am CERTAIN I will love it!

What a beautiful lady, book and poem! Yes... it brings back lots of memories of my childhood too. I was raised on a farm with 5 siblings, Christian parents, food from the garden, fresh sausage made by my Mama and Daddy and love from all! Ahhh the memories! Thanks for sharing this walk back in time:)

Thank you so much for introducing Reflections to your readers. I know that any southerner will absolutely love it.
I am trying to get it on every coffee table in the south! (smile)
I love that the book helps to bring back personal memories for each reader.
It is very heartwarming and gratifying as a writer to hear the stories.
Thanks again to you and your readers for your interest my "little book of southern poems".

Do you live in MS, BJ? I hate all those stupid southern jokes and I'm a yankee! A transplanted one, but still. The only jokes I kind of understand are the WV ones... LOL.

Btw... I love the name Grits!!!

I'm not a southern girl but the poem resonated with me and reminded me of days gone by. What she describes in the poem reminded me of my childhood in South Dakota and Nebraska.

I am so glad she wrote this and the fact that she is not 'white', I feel, will give her even more credibility in dispelling the negative attitudes so many people have of the south - especially Mississippi. Thank you so much for posting about this and I am headed over to her blog right now.

Hello BJ; Thank you for letting us know about such a book and the lady who wrote it.. I love the poem, even though I am not from the south, it did bring back memories of my child hood sitting on my grandmothers front porch doing all the same things you talked about,, she had a garden that was full of just about any thing, and fruit trees,,she could really cook and can... how I miss those days... Now that hubby and I live in the south, does that count as being a southerner??? lol
I will have to check out her book.

Hugs;
Alaura
