2ND TIME AROUND TUESDAY.

DIANE is hosting this great event once again...
Be sure to go over to see her and her list of others
that want to share their 2ND TIME AROUND'S.....
Thanks so much for coming by to see me...
*
THIS HONEY from POTTERY BARN is what I WANT
for my dining room....
*

BUT, THIS is what I HAVE....
and, please don't get me wrong...
I love this piece...
not only does it look nice...it has tons of storage and I love that..
I keep my plastic and paper goods here..plates, cups, etc... GASP..... ooo, yes..we do use paper and plastic at times....;O)
It holds ALL my cook books and they are handy to get to...
**
I learned a long time ago that we don't always get what we WANT
and have to work with WHAT WE'VE GOT....
and....
we have to work with the MISTERS that really don't want us to PAINT something
that we are REALLY WANTING to paint....
Now..MY MISTER has never, once, told me NO to something
I want to do...BUT...being a M.A.N., he DOES love natural woods...
and, of course, we want them HAPPY....
HE MADE THIS CABINET with his own two hands and doesn't
own any furniture making tools...
THE MAN IS GOOD !!
*
He made this cabinet to go beneath another tv cabinet, making
it all one unit and it looked great..then we were blessed to getting a BIG screen
and used the TOP part of the set for it...
*
NOW...I have something that will work as a buffet in my dining room
beneath the pass-thru from the kitchen....
*

I can't use anything really tall here, as you can see because I need the space on top for STUFF !!
* OOO, I do love my stuff, ya'll
*

I buy everyone of these rattan wrapped bottles in thrift stores
that I can get ! They add a lot of texture and interest and...
I just plain like their looks...isn't it funny the things that we like...
rattan wrapped bottles, little wooden boxes, old OLD books...big, old keys...
anything graphic...
I think it might be the texture they add that makes us happy...?
*
"OK, MR. SWEET...even tho I think this would look FABULOUS
dressed in BLACK..
I must admit it adds some warmth to our dining room....
and it DOES match the table and chairs..
which would also look FABULOUS dressed in BLACK...shhhhh....
he would have a HUGH heart attack if he ever heard me say that...
*
but, you know what ? He wouldn't say NO...it's
just that I know he likes the natural wood of it...
Sooooo....
this 2ND TIME AROUND chest is going to stay it's natural
honey pine color because
honoring MR. SWEET'S
preference is more important than
ANY OLD BLACK PAINT...

I do love the chest. I guess since Mr. Sweet made it with his own two hands, he should probably have the final say. I know we ladies have a hard time leaving well enough alone!! ;-D

I bought a big old chest years ago at an antique store with every intention of painting it white. The Husband was mortified. He showed me all the wood detail and the grain and trim... and I thought, okay, I'll give it a little time. I polished it up until it was gleaming and have it in my living/dining room. And you know what? I love it. Just the way it is. Sometimes we just have to part with our paint brushes!!

If that sweet man made it with his own hands and he didn't want it painted then I'd have to accede to that, sweetpea! It's beautiful..

BJ,

Love the cabinet and the rooster items you have on it. Your hubby has talent to have made it for you.

Enjoyed my visit. Have a great week.

I'm with you, I would have to leave it the way your sweetheart made it....even though I believe with all my heart everything wood should be painted black! LOL

I've never seen a rattan wine bottle holder, that's neat.

OH bj..this is great...but..I can't keep up with all these days. I nearly died getting the Monday thingy off the ground!
I'll just come here and look at yours...THAT is some chest. HOW I love storage!

Well darn, and I was all set to give you a teacup and a lemonade cart. :) and I see this sign that says..no no! Just teasing. Yeah...I sort of understand though. Honest.
So...how are you?? Yes, yes, I know I already commented but I can't sleep...so I am out "blog hopping" What is it...age? I do this SO much!
Hugs...sigh...

That's a great chest with lots of storage space. I like all the goodies you have on it too. Mr. Sweets is so good to you. I don't blame you at all for honoring his wish for the natural wood. :)

Stacey said...

Oh I forgot to ask, you have a picture on your sidebar of a bicycle with geraniums. What does that lead to? I couldn't get it to click and that picture definitely caught my attention!

Terri Steffes said...

Loving the stuff! I love my stuff, too. I saw that someone asked about my link. Being a private blog is rather lonely but the reasons are right for doing it. I am thinking of starting another blog but using a fictious name. What do you think of that?

Terri Steffes said...

Oops, jumped the gun on that one. That link isn't mine... I got confused!

Hi BJ...just dropping in for a quick visit...your Mr. Sweet is one talented man...love that hutch!
It must be a guy thing...wood & paint is a no-no...LOL
Still on a semi-bloggy break...but hope to be back online regularly soon. ;-) Bo

BJ, I love the chest, but like you, think it would be just divine in black!!! Your Mr. Sweets is a darn talented furniture crafter! Since he was good enough to build it for you, I'd say you're giving him his just deserts by keeping the natural wood. It's beautiful just as it is. Have a great day!

Many hugs.........

I guess I'm a man because I like natural wood too. However, I am thinking about painting an entertainment unit ... OH MY!

Why do all guys like the wood look? I too love the black but love the fact that he made this himself more. What a beautiful job he did! Priceless.

I LOVE this beautiful piece! Your Mr. Sweet is talented indeed:>) I have a similar cabinet that my sweet honey made just for me and, yes, I'll admit I would love to paint it! But he spent so much time on the finish and is of the same mindset as your honey (don't paint good wood!) So I fit it into my little cottage home and remember how much he loves me to spend all that time making it:>) I secretly think that as soon as we get our homes filled with painted wood, the real thing will come back in vogue and we'll all wish we hadn't been so swift with the brush:>)

Dena said...

I agree too BJ, although I have a hope chest coffee table that my hubby made that I am itching to paint black. Heheheee, it is staying natural for the same reason ;)

Hugs,
D

BJ, the chest you hubby made is beautiful. I know it would look wonderful painted black. But, I would never paint something that my hubby made for me. Who knows how long black will be popular. And then what? You'll wish you never painted it. Now, if on the other hand you would have picked it up on a rummage sale I would say, "Go for it". I know that you understand my point. Love it the way it is! It looks beautiful!
Hugs, Terrie

Mornin' my friend...

Girl, I'm sitting here at my computer reading my morning blogs...coffee in hand...and what a lovely post to start my day!!!

Okay, you are not going to believe this...but just last night I was looking at the Pottery Barn catalog and I spotted the very same pretty black cabinet!!! I "eyed" it for sometime, thinking how I just love it and would love to have it for my frenchy studio/office!!! Hmmm...great minds with great taste??? I just about fell off the chair when I seen your first photo!!! It's just too funny!!!

Well my friend, I think that this fabulous cabinet that your dear, sweet husband made with his very own hands...is every bit as beautiful as that ol' Pottery Barn cabinet (even tho it was black..shhhh!) Your honey really is very talented...I was looking at the beautiful lines of this cabinet...gorgeous!!! I bet it does offer some great storage too! (We use paper plates and napkins at our house too...shhhh...and even plastic utensils sometimes! Just our secret)!!! Hehe!!!

I love the pretty vignette on top of that cabinet too!!! You know, I haven't even seen any of those old rattan wrapped bottles for a long time! Hadn't even thought of them till I seen yours!!! They are really pretty and I love the texture of them too!!! I think you're right about some of the things that we love...it has alot to do with the texture!!!

Well my friend, I really enjoyed your post today...it was the perfect read to go along with my morning coffee!!! Thanks for sharing it...Oooh, love your pretty cabinet!!!

Warmest wishes,
Chari

BJ,
I love your post. My hubby also is very attached to his natural wood, so much that our new home is Adirondack style with LOTS of it! Gone are the days of my white kitchen cabinets and lots of painted furniture. I do sneak little items in one at a time though. LOL! I love your furniture, painted or not. Amy :)

I thought that you had brought it...he did a wonderful job of making it! Like most men, my husband didn't believe in painting wood, any wood, but he has come to accept that sometimes wood needs to be painted. He too, has built me items to meet our needs and has done a great job. So give a "shout out" for those sweet husbands!

Marty@A Stroll Thru Life said...

Oh I love the natural color. I also love black painted pieces but some things just need to stay the way they are. Wise woman to put your hubby's desires first. Hugs, Marty

Good Morning BJ ..... all of us love your 'stuff' too ...... I have several old pieces that need a little paint ... but maybe I'll rethink it a bit.

Carole Burant said...

If it was a bought piece of furniture I would say go for it and paint it but since it was handmade by your hubby, it would be kind of hard to alter his work:-) He certainly did a fabulous job of building it, it's gorgeous and looks perfect where you have it! xoxo

Hello BJ, Your dh is very handy that is all I can say. That cabinet is beautiful. I laughed because I have a two bottle wine holder very much like yours. I love your stuff on the top too. We do have to have our 'stuff' don't we? I think you shouldn't paint the cabinet. Our guys have to win sometimes so we can keep them happy. I happen to like natural wood too. sometimes I gasp when a blogger is going to paint a nice wood piece but then I end up loving it. See that it is good not to prejudge.

Have a great day BJ.

Hugs xoxo...Jeanne

Oh B J, try to tell him how much prettier it would be in black. You can take the middle out of the doors and have glass put in them and then VALLLLAAAAAH. You have it.

Nancy Rosalina said...

Oh BJ, What in the world would blogville do with out you! I mean, Mr. Sweet might get mad and not let you blog anymore...cause I bet ya, got that paint it black idea from somewhere in blog land! So don't paint it! I know you won't! I wouldn't either! I like the wood look! Nancy

You are a WISE woman BJ--Mr. Sweet IS a lucky man!

Thank-you for the reminder to "play" as an affirmation. I agree it is soooo important. I have a bag of crazy wigs(and tiaras)--really--:):)-- for that purpose.

He did a beautiful job on that chest! What a talented guy! I think it looks great just the way it is. Probably, in 5 yrs or so, black painted furniture will no longer be "in", and you'd have to be trying to strip it back to natural. laurie

That really is a beautiful cabinet. I can't say I blame him for asking you not to paint it. However, it would look great black! Just saying.

Anyhow, he did build you a gorgeous shelf that you painted red! Love that hutch.

Hey BJ! I, too, went to the school that taught you NEVER paint over natural wood. Though, I have to admit, I've been tempted to paint some things black...very "in" right now.
