MY SOUL FOOD ~

We all have a soul food....a food that makes us feel better than any other foods on the planet. Especially when we are a little lonely, a little tired and a little .....oh, I don't know....HUNGRY!! :)

My soul food, my heart food, is CHICKEN AND DUMPLINS'. My mom used to fix the world's very best and they were, by far, my favorite thing to eat and still are.

My brother and I always got to pull the "pulley bone" of the chicken...actually, everyone calls it the WISHBONE now. It was and still is the "pulley bone" to us.

He would pull one side and I would pull the other and the bone would break. Whoever got the longest part, would absolutely get married first....NO QUESTION....Never mind that I was 9 years older than he was....heh heh heh

After a long day out of the house today, I made a big pot of my mama's CHICKEN AND DUMPLINS'. Lots of black pepper, only the white, lean of the chicken...NO dark meat allowed! I saved that for hubby since he likes it. It has NEVER touched these lips of mine, tho....No, Sir!

Now I have my mom's fabulous recipe for homemade dumplins' and I use it when I have plenty of time. HOWEVER, canned biscuits (bless their little hearts) are delicious in that chicken broth, too. The secret is to pull and stretch until you can pull off thin little pieces. Oh, yummy! (Remember, lots of black pepper)

I was so tired, I didn't fix a salad, a veggie, nothing else to go with this little, flavorful, bowl of wonderfulness. BUT, HOWEVER....I DID manage to find a couple of pieces of that pecan fudge I made the first of the week...one for me and one for hubby!
I plan on a more restful day today....hope you do, too!

Yummy BJ! I love chicken and dumplins. My Grandmother used to make it for me and it was out of this world delicious:) She always called it the pulley bone too.
And absoulutely, the more black pepper the better.

Hope you have a restful day.

Good Mornin BJ,
Dadburn you!!!! Here I am sitting at the computer having my second cup of coffee and you want to talk food. LOL. My mouth is so watering for some Chicken and Dumplin's now. My Great-Aunt that I shared with yall last week used to make Chicken and Dumplin's too. Oh man, she was a great cook. People would pay her to cook things for her. Her specialty was cakes tho. She always made homemade(not from the box)German Chocolate Cake and Coconut Cake. You talk about some lip smackin' goin on. LOL. Oh, and she used to cook Chitlin's too. The very first time I had Chitlins' we were at her house. I thought I was eating Chicken. Come to find out after I had stuffed myself on them, it was Chitlin's. They were so good. She knew how to fix em up. Yes Maam she did. I have fixed Chicken and Dumplin's before, but they weren't as good as hers. I usually don't put alot of pepper in mine tho. I can't handle alot of hot and spicy foods. I usually just let everyone pepper their own. Dadburn it, I'm gonna have to make me some Chicken and Dumplin's now. I think I will wait till after Christmas tho. When you have time, stop by. I have another award for you today. Well, take care my friend and have a great Thursday. May God Bless You and Yours.

Love & Hugs,
I remember it being called the Pulley Bone as well. We always said whoever got the big part would have Good Luck.

I was just telling my mother last night on the phone that this weekend I'm going to fix Chicken and Dumplin's. It's going to be colder here where I live and that is always good cold weather food. I use strips of flour tortillas in mine but I may try to the canned biscuits. Yummmm !!!

BJ, that looks simply delicious! I know what you mean about soul food or comfort food as I call it. Mine is a very simple aussie classic.....thick sliced hot buttered toast with Vegemite spread on top and a cup of hot sweet tea. It's the first thing I run for when I'm feeling kinda blue. I hope you have a lovely restful day today sweetie!

I'm comin' right over for a bowl of that chicken and dumplings! Yummmm!! My mom use to make that often also when we were growing up...gosh, it's been ages since I've made dumplings. I still love doing the wishbone thing and of course only using the little finger to pull! We always make a wish when pulling and whoever gets the longest part, their wish will come true:-) Aren't these simple little traditions so much fun!! xoxo

I guess this time of year is not suitable for dieting, everyone posts the loveliest food. I am hungry now so am going to go and get something out of the fridge.

Have a wonderful day BJ. Talk to you later.

Loved this walk down memory lane today. We also said pulley bone (still do),but we were always told the one who got the bigger half would get what the wished for. My Mom made great Chicken and Dumplin's too. Don't know if youve ever had them or not ,but my Mom use to make me Carmel Dumplins on my Birthday. Mom has been gone for 15 yrs. I really miss all these special things she use to make. Not that I can't make them, they just never taste the same.
Also thanks for stopping my blog.

BJ, your chicken and dumplins look so yummy! My Mom used to make them, she has been gone for 20 years now. I haven't ever tried to make them. Something tells me they will never taste as good as Mom's but maybe I will have to give it a try some time.
Thanks for sharing and of course it reminded me of a long ago wonderful memory.

Mmmmmm. I also love chicken and dumplings but don't like making the dumplings. I'm going to try the canned biscuits next time. THanks, BJ.

I am with you on the chicken and dumplings but I have never made it for myself. I love your photos!

Hi BJ. Have I told you how much I love your blog? It is so entertaining.

I love chicken and dumplings, too, but like you, I like for the dumplings to be really thin.

Also, when I was growing up and my Mom fried chicken, us kids would always argue over who was going to get the pulley bone. I don't like the dark meat of the chicken either.

I hope you have a restful evening and a good day tomorrow

Oh, that sounds fabulous. I love chicken and dumplings, biscuits, or anything.
I usually crave pot roast with carrots, potatoes, and onions.

Boy that looks good! Guess I'll be making chicken and dumplings this weekend. Have to after reading your blog, I've got craving for some right now! I used to make mine with the canned biscuits, but about two years ago a friend told me about the flour tortillas. They're even easier. Can'd decide which way I like it, they're both good.
My dad and I use to fight over the pully bone. Best piece of the chicken!! Then my brother and I would use it to make a wish. The one with the longest part would have his wish come true.
What great memories. Thanks for taking us down memory lane!!!
Have a very Merry Christmas!
Cyndy

Oh BJ: I just L-O-V-E chicken & dumplings especially w/lots of black pepper. My 87 year old mom usually overdoses things with it but it's so good. I am so hungry for chicken & dumplings now - all I've had today is 1/2 Sonic hamburger (or handleburg as my granddaughter Taylor says). Later girlfriend - Judy
