I have only two vintage suitcases...
but, they are both DANDIES !
The bottom one is wicker and olden and I found it several years ago at GOODWILL...
"let's hear it for Goodwill !! "
I would sooo like to know the PLACES IT'S BEEN and THE PEOPLE IT'S KNOWN..

Now, that little brown, beat-up suitcase without it's strap handle belonged to
MY DADDY....
Oh, boy, it IS OLDEN.
It's so worn and beat up....scratched and gouged....
For as long as I can remember, he kept olden photos in this sweet-sized suitcase...
but when I opened it....

THIS is what I found.Olden, yellowed newspapers, covering the assassination of President J.F. Kennedy,
in 1963.
I can't believe what good shape these papers are in.
Oh, how I remember this day...
when THIS happened, I couldn't believe it.
I will NEVER, NEVER, EVER be convinced that Pres. Kennedy's murder
wasn't a very large CONSPIRACY.
Yes, sir...I'll believe it to my dying day..
Mr. Sweet, on the other hand ..........
I just sat down in the floor and cried. !!
I'm afraid I strayed from the subject in my post...
I really got emotional when I found these papers..
I had found them years ago....just forgot they were in that olden, battered suitcase.
I just put them back inside the suitcase.
*GULP....and took a deep breath.

As for the treasures? Wow. You have some wonderful artifacts!! (I'm a conspiracy theorist on that particular subject, too.)
Now to read about the family vacation tips. Here's my tip: Marry the President. Apparently, that little job gets you about a vacation a month, and you don't even have to pay for them yourself.

BJ, I love that you have your daddy's suitcase. And, we kept newspapers from then, too. Such a tragedy! I was in sixth grade in my Spanish class in Jacksonville, Florida.
ReplyDeleteLove that old suitcase ... especially the one that was your Fathers and he saved all those papers for you. What memories. I was working in a bank in Abilene when we heard the news and everyone just became frozen in space, so unbelievable. Thanks for sharing.

Oh I love those stacked pretties! Then... the newspapers, I remember that day also:( When my Mother-in-law passed away, I brought home her old newspapers and magazines! I look thru them every few years when I run across that box! Have a blessed day dear BJ, HUGS!

I, too, have similar newspapers. Mine were in Mother's cedar chest!
I pray our Nation never faces another day in History as the day we all remember so very vividly. Perhaps that was our parents theory. . .to keep that day forever in our minds...as they did Pearl Harbor Day!!!

Fantastic mementos from a terrible time in our nation's history. I think we all remember exactly where we were when we heard the awful news. I agree that it wasn't a random act by one crazed man, either.
ReplyDeleteI have a wicker basket very similar to your bottom one, BJ. It sits out in the garage. I am going to dust it off & bring it in to see if I can find a special spot to display it.

I love the bed nightstand concept!! That is way cool. Now I have the idea of making a bedroom look like a ship's cabin and making luggage as tables. Love it.

It's so cool that you found the old newspapers. My husband is with you and thinks it was a conspiracy!
PCool suitcases...I also remember the day like it was yesterday...5th grade....those were the days when we were all glued to the tv...and theories? Everyone had their own...I especially remember the rumor that kennedy was alive, in a coma, and that he would never recover from it...and being so young, I believed that one! I lived in Boston and everyone adored the kennedys....sad day in history...I also still have the newspapers-- front pages of Boston globe
ReplyDeleteSome things in life you never forget regardless of how old you are. Such a useless tragedy. I like the way you are using the old suitcases. I still have my mother's vintage overnight bag. It is in excellent condition.

ReplyDeleteActually author C.S. Lewis died the same day but many didn't know about it as his death was obviously overshadowed by the news.
I have a few. I use them as photo props. One actually has a crack in it because the kid I sat on it was too rough. :-( Kids just don't behave like they used to.

ReplyDeleteI was about 7 when JFK was assassinated and I remember that even here in Canada, we were sent home early from school (west coast) and the impact it made. Will the truth ever be revealed?

ReplyDeleteI gave away two suitcases that belonged to my husband when he was in the Navy. He'd bought these Samsonite babies, alligator or snake skin. Brown. I thought they were horrid. My daughter took them and of course she has them stacked and of course I'm jealous and now love them. Who know that after all those years they would become chic!!!

ReplyDeleteThe other day at the mission store there was a HUGE old trunk and I took a few iphone pictures of it. I will post them one of these days if they turned out. I think it was probably what they call a steamer trunk ? Not sure but I could have sat in it, it was that big!
BJ, when I was scrolling down your post, I thought the first photo of your suitcases was from a magazine! What a perfect vignette. I love that look...stacked suitcases. Oh how lucky to have that suitcase of your father's. I have few memories of that day...mostly just the image of John John and Caroline standing at the funeral?? My parents were pretty careful to protect us from things on the news when we were little. I learned lots about the Vietnam War after it was over! I always did the opposite and made my kids watch the news when something serious happened!
ReplyDeleteOh bj, those cases are dandies! Like you say, what stories they could tell. I must tell you that from now on when I look at mine I will think of Humphrey and Ingrid. Your father's case is a real treasure. I think the newspapers would have taken me back to tears also. I hate to turn this sweet post around, but I wouldn't doubt if those papers in that pristine condition aren't worth some money. Love ya sweetie and thanks for the shout out!
