What's for breakfast...?

Mr. Sweet and I eat a LOT of cereal..
good-for-ya cereal.
with plenty of fresh fruits to go along with it..
and skim milk....ALWAYS.

When I was a kid, we ate
oatmeal more than any other kind.

There wasn't as many different kinds of cereal back then.
WHEATIES
GRAPE NUTS and
GRAPE NUT FLAKES ..
POST TOASTIES
amd probably a lot more that
I just don't remember.

Then, as I got older, I discovered
SHREDDED WHEAT....
My daddy and I both loved shredded wheat...
little brother, KEITH, not so much.
He still liked OATMEAL..with butter, sugar and cinnamon...
which is the way I STILL like it only with BROWN SUGAR.
My mother didn't like Shredded Wheat....always said she would just as soon go get a pile of dry hay from a field, add sugar and milk to it and try to eat it.

Daddy would look at me and just roll his eyes....
we KNEW better. We KNEW it was one of the best cereals ever discovered and we knew it was GOOD FOR YOU.

I still buy a box of Nabisco Shredded Wheat when I am missing my daddy a lot.....somehow, having a bowl makes me feel like he is having one, too...
up in Heaven....and still rolling his eyes at Mama as she sits beside him, eating her oatmeal.

THEN, a little later, I discovered CHERRIOS
and fell knee deep in love.
Our whole family liked CHERRIOS and we had a bowl almost every morning, along with 2 pieces of toast...one plain with butter...the other, CINNAMON.
My brother and I had that breakfast for years and years, it seems.
Mom just knew we were getting a good balanced breakfast....never mind all the REAL sugar and WHOLE milk we consumed.
Both brother and I are doing good in our later years so I guess it all didn't hurt us too much.
Then, when my kiddos came along, it was
CAP'N CRUNCH
FRANKENBERRIES
COOKIE CRISP
GOLDEN GRAHAMS
FRUIT LOOPS......
so many more I can't even think of them.
Nearly ALL were coated in SUGAR....
lots and lots of SUGAR.

I'd start worrying about it and then I'd read
FORTIFIED WITH 60 VITAMINS
and CALCIUM
and .......and........and.........................
and I'd feel better.
At least they were eating breakfast. A lot of their friends didn't start their day with
SUNSHINE.....

They are both healthy enough now and both have sworn off SUGAR.

*and totally RANDOM, she adds......

This little BLUEBIRD OF HAPPINESS
just happened to be sitting beside me when I took these photos and he just looked like he needed to be in pictures, too.

I love this little pie bird. He is the only one I have and I'd love to have a small collection of them one day.
Then I look around at all my JUNQUE and think, WHY???

I've gotta get busy and mow the lawns while Mr. Sweet weed-eats everything.

  1. Hi BJ: O my gosh: You brought back the best memory! My dad and I used to eat shredded wheat too, the hay bale kind, and he always put a little hot water from the t-kettle on it. It seemed to make it just perfect. My daughter, so health conscious, eats the little wheat squares, but she also says why would she want to eat a bale of hay. I still love it..Hope you had a good weekend..Judy

  2. Oatmeal, shredded wheat, and hot cereals are my favorite. I KNOW I could live on oatmeal. I never liked any cold cereals. When FRUIT LOOPS were invented Mom tried to get me to eat those, "EWWW"! I could not! I love your little birdie. My Hubby LIKES Shredded wheat but still calls it a bale of hay, hehe! That is TOO CUTE! Your Mom and Dad Made me smile!

  3. We had eggs & biscuits alot! I can't remember any cold cereal, but my moms' really awful oatmeal -- it was so bad. I didn't like eggs either, so breakfast was not a pleasant experience for me....lol! I love it now, especially "out!" We do occasionally have breakfast cereal for dinner, & our faves are whole wheat shredded wheat & raisin bran.

  5. I LOVE cereal and more often than not, I eat it for dinner rather than breakfast. A bowl of Special K with walnuts and blueberries is my favorite. Or with dried cranberries, a dash of cinnamon and chopped pecans. Yum! Much to the chagrin of my children, I don't buy cereal if it has more than 9 grams of sugar. That little pie bird is so very sweet! Wishing you a great week. Tammy

  11. Shredded wheat...ahhh, yes. I made a lot of it while Nan was with us. She loved it with hot water poured over it and topped with a pat of butter and a bit of salt and pepper. The shredded wheat would soak up all that hot water and soften to a hot cereal. She and her dad ate it that way. Now I have never tried it.

I smiled to read how you were conflicted by sugared cereal. So was I! My compromise was that it could be eaten as a snack like popcorn, but it couldn't be eaten for breakfast. Right. Like that was changing things. =D

  13. Oatmeal in the winter and shredded wheat in the summer - we poured boiling water over ours to soften it first.
I've always been a cereal for breakie gal too BJ, my fav right now is the Fibre 1 flakes and I put fruit on top.
I know some that only have toast in the morning and find cereal disgusting - all what you grew up with I guess.

  14. I'm not a big breakfast eater, I just need my coffee!! I know that's not good, but I've always been that way. Out of my three kids my son and youngest daughter LOVE their breakfast and my oldest daughter takes after me. I do love Shredded Wheat though:) Have a great week BJ!

  16. Oh by the way, my husband and his dad still eat the big shredded wheat. We call it, "pillows". When I go to the store Paul reminds me to get him some pillows.

  26. I love cereal. Pretty much anything...and I love the junk ones too....shredded wheat is a fav of mine, however, this is how I grew up eating it...
Put two large squares in a bowl and cover with hot water...just for a few seconds then push on them and drain off the extra water.
Add milk and sugar, bananas if you have them...oh, I just love it...and my husband thinks I am crazy...but then again, I love apple pie in a bowl of milk...for breakfast!

  27. BJ,
The one and only Cheerios!!! As a child, I didn't eat cereal. My MoMa bought me Sara Lee Cheesecake and put it in the freezer. As she made the coffee each morning, she'd cut me a slice to defrost. YuM! no silver spoon in my mouth...just Sara Lee Cheesecake! Ha! NOW..it's the one and only...Cheerios with a glass of OJ!
    Fondly,
    Pat

  29. I still love shredded wheat and grapenuts! I like Cheerios dry to snack on and once in a while I give in to the Captain Crunch, Frosted Flakes or Cocoa Krispies!! I didn't like breakfast as a kid, but my mom made me either eat toast or drink an instant breakfast. Now, most days it is Greek Yogurt for me...sometimes cereal.
