PEACH SKIN JELLY

Making Peach Skin Jelly is a very olden cooking treat.
My mother, her mother and her mother all made jelly from the peeled skins of fresh, ripe and beautiful peaches.
Probably many people today still use the peelings of their peaches to make a delightful and delicious jelly.
PEACHES are one of the prettiest fruits to me...well, behind STRAWBERRIES, of course.
The peaches are just beautiful this year.
Every one we've bought have been juicy and sweet.
When I peel my peaches for jelly....or a nice, sweet PIE, I always save the peelings.
These are the peelings from just a few peaches.
My dad taught me years ago how to boil them for awhile, add sugar to taste and a little pectin and make
PEACH SKIN JELLY
Sadly, I have misplaced his recipe..
but I found THIS one that is very very close, if not exact.
There's so much flavor in the skins...it is a total shame to just toss them.
 After gently boiling for awhile,
I use the colander my dad bought for me about 30 yrs. ago..
mashing the skins for all the juice you can get..
When the ripe peaches have been sliced..
I sprinkle them with FRUIT FRESH.
This keeps the fruit from turning brown..
great on apples and fruit salads that use fresh fruits.
So out of these few peaches,
I have a nice sized bag to freeze for...
a delicious pie, sometime during the winter when it will taste sooo good...
OR...I MIGHT make...
PEACHY WAFFLE..
doesn't that look amazing...
I could eat shoe leather if it had peaches and POWDERED SUGAR
This amazing treat comes from WILL COOK FOR SMILES..love that name.
OR...
PEACH COBBLER FOR ONE.... OR TWO
(Mr. Sweet would have a running fit if I didn't make enuf for TWO...:))
That looks sooo good, LYNN and EARL over at
HAPPIER THAN A PIG IN MUD.
... a couple of small jars of the BEST
PEACH SKIN JELLY
SO..
if you decide to make Peach Jelly or Preserves this summer,
think about saving the skins and making this old fashioned GOODNESS...
It really is good and you  will feel sooo domestic, doing what your grandmother
or great grandmother did, years and years ago.
***
I didn't have the blessing of knowing either of my grandmothers.
Both died before I was born.
To have a *grandmother relationship* is a HUGE blessing and I always
loved hearing stories about my grandmothers.
My mom's mother died when my mother was 8 yrs. old, so she didn't
have a lot of memories to share.
Her older sis, my AUNT LILLIAN, did have some stories to tell, tho.
She did tell me that my grandmother was an awesome cook.
She must have learned a lot in her short life...she was 33 yrs old when she died.
Tuberculosis claimed her life, as it did so many during that time period.
and you MUST know that I have to make
HOMEMADE BISCUITS
(recipe under RECIPES on my blog tabs)
when we have this good jelly around.
LIFE IS GOOD !

I hope your day is full of blessings and happiness...and
LOVE...!

I am playing with:
WOW...that's lots of partying going on..
Hope you will visit some of these fabulous places.
THANKS FOR COMING BY...

  4. Mmmm, sounds delicious. I've never heard of peach skin jelly. In fact, yesterday I peeled a whole bunch of ripe peaches and washed the peels down the drain. Darn! You are right...the peaches have been wonderful this year. My sister in law brought a bunch of them from Fairfield, TX last weekend. I froze them because they were getting too ripe. Won't it be a pleasure to pull them out later this year (when it's not 105) and remember summer?

  5. I have never heard of Peach Skin Jelly, but because of you I am now wiser than I was a few minutes ago! I am always amazed at how resourceful the previous generations were, wasting nothing. There are so many things we can learn from them.

  15. Everything sounds and looks good. Yes, the Grandmother-Grandchild relationship is a wonderful thing. As a grandmother with 3 grandchildren, I sometimes think that the purpose of having children was to one day have grandchildren to enjoy. Have a lovely weekend and thanks for all the good ideas for peaches. Mickie :)

  16. Oh I'd love to have one of your wonderful biscuits, spread with real butter, and plenty of your peach skin jelly. I know it's good even though I've never had any or even known that it could be done. And a tall glass of sweet ice tea, which prolly wouldn't be such a great idea just before bed time. Stay cool down there...

  18. BJ,
Peach skin jelly sounds wonderful! I often make corn cob jelly and sounds like they are products of the same premise.
Making jelly or preserves, or canning. It's a lot of fun, and very satisfying!

  22. Hi BJ, You must have read my mind! I was just remembering as a teenager helping my aunt put up hundreds of jars of peach skin jelly. This is still the best jelly I have ever tasted. Thanks so much for sharing this and for bringing back such happy memories.

  31. Oh yum. My mouth is watering. How delicious your jelly looks. I love old fashioned recipes like this where they didn't waste anything. To see a fast food wrapper on the ground saddens my heart. When our families just a few generations ago cooked like this. What a blessing fresh fruit is anytime you can get it anyhow! Love to make some biscuits this weekend! Thanks for making me think of it. A pleasure to visit as always! Thanks for joining HSH!

  32. Hey there bj, I came over to see you yesterday. Smile. You are right though, I have been recuperating from vacation and Grand's Week. I thought I would get a breather and my niece surprised us with a visit for a few days. I was so glad to see her because she had breast cancer and I haven't seen her since she finished chemo therapy. She is 52 years old and we have been so worried. It was good to see her hair is growing back in and she was so happy it wasn't gray.
    So, I have been BUSY!!!

Yes, I am leaving for Canada on the 27th. Claudie is having a 'Summer Breeze' Blog Party. I am surprised Bill said I could go. I had to earn the money and I did. I did an antique show with my sisters and made enough for the ticket with $200 to spare. I sold stuff I had stored from when I was in the business. So, I also cleaned out stuff from the attic. There will be six of us including Claudie. I know we will have a good time.

I LOVE the peach skin jelly. You know how much I love to make jam. Our peaches have not been so great. I threw some out just last week that tasted awful. I bought some at the flea market that are very good though. Forget the grocery store. Yuck!

Gotta get my PS post up. See you tomorrow.
    Love, Jeanne xoxoxo
