Hi, Sweethearts.. ♥

I have a few emails, asking for the recipe
so here I am doing another post on the sweet little things.
*wonder if I should put the recipe on my sidebar?*
A big skillet of homemade BUTTERMILK BISCUITS

...just made a fresh pot of DUNKIN DONUTS coffee
in my vintage CORNING PECULATOR COFFEE POT.
You can smell and hear it perking all over the cottage...
My Mr. Coffee went kerPlunk last week and I've not been in a big hurry to replace it.
I am enjoying the ♪♪ perk perk ♫♪ sound..
it takes me right back in the middle of my momma's kitchen...

I WISH I could say these came off my plum tree but...
they actually came from the market.
No matter WHERE they come from...they are ripe, sweet and full of juice..
♥♥♥
I actually don't even HAVE a plum tree but I am wondering...WHY NOT?
I should have planted one YEARS ago.
If YOU get a chance to plant a fruit tree, I urge you to do it..
You will so enjoy the fruit in a few years and, boy, it will be MUCH cheaper.

These little COFFEE SHOP plates look so cute, nestled down with
the set of Wal*Mart dishes I bought a few years back.
I SELDOM buy NEW dishes but BOTH these sets were bought new...
♥
This set seems to look ok summer and winter...
just depends what you put with them, I think.
I used my golden Rooster tablecloth here...
it seems to really bring out the golden color of the dishes...
and a touch of my signature BLACK and WHITE...
it just goes with ANYthing
The Wal*Mart dishes...
...a service for four...
When I went back to get another set, they had already discontinued them...
SHOOT..!!
Then, one day, early spring, I stopped at the ♫♪♪ GOODWILL ♫♪♪
AND THERE WAS A SERVICE FOR 4
...brand new!
of the large plates, smaller ones and bowls..
no coffee cups but that's ok.
So, now I have enuf for 8 dinner guest and ....I'M TICKLED.

♥Vintage,olden flatware that I love...
my Aunt Bonnie started the set back in the late 50's.
She gave them to my mom who added a few pieces
and then they were passed down to me.
I found a few pieces on Ebay a few years back.
I am always on the watch for a few more pieces to add...
they will go to daughter or granddaughters.....or grandboys, for that matter.

2 cups all purpose flour
2 Tablespoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/3 cup shortening
3/4 cup BUTTER MILK
(no buttermilk ?...just add a tablespoon (or cap full) of vinegar to regular milk (we called it SWEET MILK when I was a kid...every now and then, I say "sweet milk" and the grands look at me like I have
3 heads !!) ;>)
*****
The dough needs to be moist...not dry, so if you need to add a little more milk, by all means, DO.

Wonderful post..I will try your biscuits, they look wonderful.''Question.....is that canisters in the first picture?? What is the one on the right for, it appears to say Mehl...that is the last name of the young man who does some work for us when we have something for him to do. I'd love to find one of these if that is indeed what it says...do you know the maker??
ReplyDeleteThanks..sorry for all the questions.
Oh BJ I love everything about this post! The perking pot, the biscuits, the cast iron skillet it all takes me back to my mom's kitchen! I have been looking for a biscuit recipe like hers and I do believe that I have just found it! Thank you so much sweet lady for bringing back wonderful memories! There is nothing like a biscuit made in a cast iron skillet! I am going to try this out this weekend with my mom's good old sausage gravy. Or maybe sooner. My mouth is watering right now!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love your dishes and the tablescapes you set, but most of all I am so happy to have your biscuit recipe. I am sure it sounds like the one my mamma had and hers were always the best biscuits in the whole world. Somewhere her receipe got lost, so I am going to adopt yours. Thanks bunches. Hugs, marty
ReplyDeleteI'd almost forgotten the sound of a coffee pot "perking". Nice memories. We use a Mr. Coffee and now it has a friend next to it...I got one of those coffee makers with the pods. I love it, you want one cup of coffee...you've got it with no muss, no fuss and so fast. Hubby is still making his by the pot.
ReplyDeleteThe biscuits look to die for. I'm avoiding anything fattening for the moment...but this too shall pass and I'll have to make your recipe. Yummy!
And what more does a body need besides good coffee and biscuits, maybe some great fresh made apricot jam OF COURSE!!
ReplyDeleteLooks so good!...and that is awesome being able to pass the dishes down thru the generations.

Yum Yum and my husband calls it sweet milk every once in a while, too.
ReplyDeleteI would rather have a biscuit than dessert! My recipe is the same...except I use a little bit of baking soda, too. Can't make biscuits OR cornbread without buttermilk! ♥
ReplyDeleteThose are picture perfect biscuits and I KNOW they must taste even better. My great-grandma Nanny would make biscuits all the time and if there was no desert she would give us a biscuit with butter and jam and the jam would usually be her canned preserves. That was our desert. Homemade Biscuits do bring back some good memories.
ReplyDeleteHugs
I've been craving biscuits and sausage gravy lately.... I think we will be having it sooner rather than later...probably for dinner instead of breakfast.
ReplyDeleteyour table setting looks beautiful and welcoming.. I love how you put items together and really make it feel like HOME.. A place real people would enjoy and want to be... I am copying that recipe again so thanks for posting it..

I have plates very similar to yours...I think they came from WalMart, also.
ReplyDeleteYour biscuits look sinfully delicious!
Your dishes are pretty BJ, love the coffee set! I haven't had perked coffee since my G-Mom-B made it, very good! And yep, this Yankee thinks it would be a great idea for you to link the Biscuit recipe to your sidebar:@)
ReplyDeleteLove your dishes and how funny that you found the match at GW!?! They look like they are perfect for a sunny morning meal. We had one of those Corning Ware pots when I was young (I think everyone did;>) and my grandmother always added evaporated milk to her cup along with a good scoop of sugar...lol..I had "coffee milk" with her when I was 4 or 5.
ReplyDeleteYour bisquits look wonderful. I will try this recipe. Do you ever serve them with Chocolate gravy? (a good old Southern staple for breakfast).
Wonderful post, BU. I am always enchanted when I come here! xo Diana
those biscuits are making my mouth water right now...Especially with a good apricot jelly...Yum..Yum..
ReplyDeleteshortening? do you use like the white crisco shortening?
Gonna give em a try...
shug
BJ, I want to come to your house for biscuits and Duncan Donuts coffee! Your biscuits look delicious!!! :D
ReplyDeletePlease post the biscuit recipe on your sidebar, I know I'll use it again and again. We just planted a plum tree so I'll send you some fresh fruit next year. I can smell the coffee from here!
ReplyDeleteBJ, I lOVE the Walmart dishes and you are so lucky to have found the rest at GW!!!! They look so versatile! Love those coffee plates too. I am SUCH a dishaholic:):) Hope you have a great weekend! XO, Pinky
ReplyDelete"Oh Yes" you must put the recipe on your sidebar! AND this is about the RIGHT TIME to make "Strawberry Shortcake ALA BJ's Biscuits"!!! "Sounds YUMMY to me"!
ReplyDeleteLove your dishes and how lucky to have gotten the other set at GW, that must have been "Some Happy Dance" in the isle! I remember that flatware... It looks SO nice on your table!
Have a very "Happy 4th of July"!
Big Hugs to you,
Donna
You'll have us all baking biscuits in the morning this weekend - there will lots of happy and surprised husbands!
ReplyDeleteI've never baked in a cast iron pan, so this will be a first for me.
This sounds yummy! You have a beautiful blog! Thanks for sharing. LG Tina
ReplyDeleteGood morning, fellow Texan! I was raised in the heart of Knox Prairie and my mom still lives there and so enjoy your blog.
ReplyDeleteI miss hearing the "perking" sound of my mom's Corning Ware percolator. Your blog brings back a lot of memories.
Your biscuits look wonderful and was wondering if you've ever prepared them with canola oil instead of shortening? My husband recently had a quadruple bypass and has to watch his fat intake. We are told to use canola oil or olive oil to cook with.
Thank you for your "sweet" blog and we are praying every day for rain in "our" part of the state, which needs it desperately.
That's me knocking at your door. I hope there are some left to share.♥
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness bj, I just pored myself a cup of coffee to enjoy while looking at my mail and what do I see, one of your fluffy buttermilk biscuits. Boy I'd love one of those to go with my coffee. I remember hearing my mom's peculator and the wonderful aroma of the coffee while growing up. Great set of dishes to use anytime.

ReplyDeleteLUV your 4th of July blog look!!!
ReplyDelete~♥~
Oh gracious me oh my, how I'd love to dig in to your biscuits. Oh sigh, oh moan, oh whimper.
ReplyDeleteBut "them-days-is-gone-forever," I fear. With my gluten intolerance. -pout-
But your blog entry is lovely.
~♥~
Those picture looks soo perfect and biscuits look very nice and taste, I love it!
ReplyDeleteHave a nice weekend, big kisses from Croatia:)

ReplyDeleteThank you SO much for sharing your biscuit recipe, BJ! Can you believe I've NEVER made them from scratch?! *blush* My Mom used Bisquick, so I did, too. Then Pillbury came out with the cans you whack on the counter edge.
ReplyDeleteI promise to try yours real soon. Maybe tonight with Cathy's Vinegar Chicken from Wives with Knives.
LOVE all your cute decorations! I thought of you when I found my newest polka-dot items. Come see!!!
Happy 4th, Hon!
Hugs,
Rett
I can hear it perking! I can smell those biscuits. Please send me one all jammed up!
ReplyDeleteBrenda
BJ, Great post! Hot biscuits! YUM! I really enjoy your blog.
ReplyDeleteI think your cute little old percolator is soooo much more charming than the big modern looking coffee makers, the sound of the perking would be a big plus. We need to bring those back don't you think?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the biscuit recipe. I have to try them, and think of you when I eat them:>)
My Dear BJ,
ReplyDeleteOne could never ever tire of having hot biscuits at your house. I had to drag my Honey Bunny away from that pretty Red Truck. Great Post! Thank you so much for sharing with Full Plate Thursday and come back real soon.
Hope you have a great week end!
Miz Helen
BJ, You are making me hungry with pictures of those biscuits. They look delicious. Your tablescape is beautiful and I love the new dishes. Thanks for joining my party and I hope you have a great holiday weekend.
