THE EARL OF SANDWICH

using 3 cheeses...grilled to perfection..
**
The ole EARL OF SANDWICH...
started something......GOOOD...

There seems to be some debate over who ACTUALLY
invented the SANDWICH.....

1762 - It is said that the cooks at London’s Beef Steak Club, a gentleman's gaming club held at the Shakespeare Tavern, invented the FIRST  sandwich.

John Montague (1718-1792), the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, He became First Lord of the Admiralty and was patron to Capt. James Cook (who explored New Zealand, Australia, Alaska, Hawaii, and Polynesia.). Capt. Cook named the Hawaiian Islands after him, calling them the Sandwich Island. Montague Island, a large island at the entrance to Prince William Sound on the Gulf of Alaska, was also named by the famed Captain Cook.

Montaque was a hardened gambler and usually gambled for hours at a time at this restaurant, sometimes refusing to get up, even for meals.
It is said that he ordered his valet to bring him
"meat, tucked between two pieces of bread.
(THIS IS THE STORY I HAVE BEEN TOLD ALL MY LIFE, SO
IT IS THE ONE I CHOOSE TO BELIEVE !!) bj

Because Montaque also happened to be the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, others began to order "the same as Sandwich."
The original sandwich was, in fact, a piece of salt beef between two slices of toasted bread.

When you're all tired from putting CHRISTMAS decorations away for another year, ,
and, O, so hungry...
nuthin' any better than a grilled cheese sandwich.....ummm
1840 - The sandwich was introduced to America by Englishwoman Elizabeth Leslie (1787-1858). In her cookbook, Directions for Cookery, she has a recipe for ham sandwiches that she suggested as a main dish.
"Ham Sandwiches - Cut some thin slices of bread very neatly, having slightly buttered them; and, if your choose, spread on a very little mustard. Have ready some very thin slices of cold boiled ham, and lay one between two slices of bread. You may either roll them up, or lay them flat on the plates. They are used at supper or at luncheon."....from her cookbook
1900s - The sandwich became very popular in the American diet when bakeries started selling pre-sliced bread, thus making sandwiches very easy to create. Sandwiches became an easy, portable meal for workers and school children alike.
I know some of ya'll are going to laugh at one of my
favorite sandwiches...
I like to make CORN or POTATO patties,
fry them to a crisp, golden brown.
After cooling just a bit,
ketchup...ummmm...
and made into a sandwich.
*
Now, come on...
I know YOU eat something kinda weird sometimes...
tell us what it is...tell us !!

I know one thing there is NO debating over...
....how much fun we have on picnics.....with our favorite sandwiches...
...and a grandgirl...:))
My thanks to you, ole EARL OF SANDWICH !!

♥♥♥LOVE AND KISSES TO ALL OF YOU,♥♥♥

  7. Oh BJ Sweetie...
You are SO darn cute. I love this share. Didn't know so many of these things about the sandwich. What a wonderful lesson tonight.

You had me at grilled cheese. Oh sweetie, be still my little heart, we both love a good grilled cheese sandwich. How delightful is that?

Well you asked for it. There are two weird things I like to eat, and I have several of the grandkids doing the same thing now. When we go to Wendy's? I love to order a large order of french fries and large frosty. I love dipping the french fries in the frosty. The mixture of the salt with the ice cream, is out of this world. I so love it.

My second oddity is taking my mashed potatoes, putting them on my plate, adding a couple of scoops of corn in the gravy hole. Then adding the gravy on top. I mix it all up and it is so delish. Love it. So do a couple of the grands. Weird I know, but I love it.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend sweetie. Many country hugs and SO much love, Sherry

I don't have any weird sandwich combinations; however. . . different story for my sons! The youngest came up with this right into his first year of High School. Left~over cold spaghetti complete with beef marina sauce on a hotdog bun!Yuck!
To Dolly . . .on your comments!
I learned to eat my french fries with mayonnaise in Germany. Quite tasty!
    BJ. . .
with the updates on Blogger, I've noticed each time I insert a photo, I have to reset the font! So much for progress and updating!

ok weird things to eat...take left over home made mac and cheese and left over meatloaf. crumble the meat loaf up and fry in a pan - with no oil...when meatloaf is hot, add left over mac and cheese, stirring to mix it all up. when it is all hot and melted...put on plate, add salt and pepper and eat....yummy!
    Hugs,
    Penny

I can't eat scrambled eggs without ketchup, EVAH! And pork chops MUST be served with apple sauce. Probably a lot more. But you made me hungry, have to go eat!
We are getting another storm. Last one isn't even gone yet! :(
