MAGAZINE RECIPE and some BRIGHT IDEAS

is having a
GREAT COOKING MAGAZINE CHALLENGE
May 8th...
and, of COURSE, I wanted to play.
*
.Since my entire family LOVES
RED BEANS
(some of you call them PINTO beans)
I decided to try this new recipe ...
Go HERE for the recipe from
COUNTRY LIVING MAGAZINE
I always sort and wash my beans..
then I let them soak for a few hours (if I have the time)...
altho THIS recipe did not call for a HAM BONE...
I had a really great and beautiful ham bone left from our Easter ham...
and out here in West Texas, if you are BLESSED enuf to
have such a delicious treasure and you are getting ready to
*do* a pot of RED BEANS...
YOU. USE. THAT. HAM BONE.
and.....
I DID.
 OMYGOODNESS...
beans and onion and peppers and ham.
we are talkin' FLAAAA VOR !!
Now, I will say that I used peppers from a jar..
The fresh ones....O, so delicious
but a tad strong and a tad HOT
for grands...
and they love red beans.
I didn't want them to be TOO hot..
My crock pot is the large one and it was full of the beans...
the amount of pepper slices you see are what I used.
Not TOO hot but a nice little BITE to it.
The beans turned out delicious...
there's not many ways a person could RUIN a pot of Red Beans.
*
While I was browsing the magazine, I just had to show you
some of  their
BRIGHT IDEAS
I just love the idea of using a cute RACK of some kind
for rolled up, cute cup towels..
(do you call them CUP towels or TEA towels?)
Am lovin' the look of framed MAPS...
especially if you are a traveler.
There's some *works of art* maps to be had
and framed and hung together can make an awesome statement.
OH LORDY...
I LOVE THIS so so much.
The blue painted furniture with the chippy white table...breathtaking...
but without that fabulous FLOOR.......???
Who would of thought that photos of PERFUME BOTTLES
could be sooo awesome hanging above an amazing bathtub !!
Of course, I have to say here that ANYthing hanging above a
CLAW FOOT BATHTUB
would be out of this world....and that's a fact !

I just fell in love with these bookmarkers...Charming Bookmark

Jewelry designer Andrea Singarella (andrea singarella.com) fashioned these bibliophilic baubles for just a few bucks each.
To assemble your own, cut velvet ribbon  into nine-inch lengths. Purchase ribbon clamps the same width as your ribbon, then use flat-nose jewelry pliers to affix clamps to both ends of each ribbon. Finish by attaching charms, trinkets, or vintage earrings to the clamps with jump rings ($4.12 per 100 pack; amazon.com).

Mr. Sweet and I worked all day in our yard..
Trimmed hedges...
fertalized....
watered...
picked weeds....and may I just say,
we are raising a BUMPER CROP of those!!
whew....
The city of LUBBOCK is just about to run out of water so we
have been very careful about watering.
We almost lost our entire yard last year but the snows in the winter
and the really big rains in the spring
saved all the lawns and trees.
THIS YEAR, HOWEVER...
NO snows at all...
NO rain at all...
It is very pitiful out here.
We went to the nursery and bought
KNOCKOUT ROSEBUSHES...

Daughter
Daughter In Law
Granddaughter....
all such amazing and wonderful mothers.
I AM PROUD !
and then.....
we went inside and had
STRAWBERRY BLUEBERRY MILK SHAKES...
and, boy, were they good.

You did good work, Hons! And The Sweet Cottage is looking all neated-up. So much work to be done, in the spring time, everywhere.

So sorry about the water conditions. -sigh- Do you save water, from this and that, and use it to water your lovely rose bushes? Perhaps? -sigh-

Wishing you a lovely Mother's Day.

I loved this month's CL magazine. Everything in it was amazing. Loved the kitchen on the cover too. The display for the tea towels was so cute. That immediately caught my eye. I am trying to figure out what it used to be. Maybe they mentioned it and I didn't catch it.

I will purposely buy a ham just to get that delish bone and make black eye peas (Hoppin John). Of course I save and freeze the ham slices for sandwiches and for breakfasts. Hmmm. I think I need to buy a ham. Gosh BJ, now I am hungry!

Happy Mother's Day sweet friend!!!
Hugs, Sue

Now you have me craving beans! I have a ham bone that's waiting to be used in something. I might just have to start a pot this morning to simmer today. I have always loved Country Living Magazine. Great ideas you posted. I collect bookmarks - since I was little. I may have to give those a try :-) Lucky you to have good enough weather to work in the yard. Rain here yesterday and today. Thanks for playing a long this month. I think I am going to be making this a monthly challenge.

This is a great post. I really enjoyed a lot of the same decor ideas that you shared. Hope your yard and flowers survive with the water restrictions. We live in the desert & have never had to cut back on water -- go figure! Our water/sewer/garbage, which is all lumped together on one bill, does keep going up & up. Maybe that's how the city gets around actually restricting water use. LOL!

Hope you are having a great Mother's Day!

I want to live at your house because you seem to eat some of my favorite foods...and I am SURE you are the greatest cook!! I am off to Cape Cod on Thurs...when I return I am going to be painting your checks (the lids are white - thats as far as I got!!) Happy Mother's Day

We are loving red, pinto, beans here too. I use fat bacon in ours, but have found the seasoning in a can since I am on the low fat, low sugar thingie. Others don't like them as much so I just fix me an additional pot for myself. I am also praying for rain for you folks and praying for no more here. There is more rain in the forecast for next week. Not as bad but we do NOT need any more.

I couldn't let today slip by without coming to wish you a Happy Mother's Day and thanking you for being you...you always brighten my day!

I really do wish we could send you some of our wet weather. We are having beautiful sunshine today and temps in the 70's, but more rain tomorrow when we are driving the 2 hour trip to the airport. My daughter leaves tomorrow and my dad arrives!

I hope you are having a wonderful day!

Happy Mother's Day bj...down here we call them pinto beans and your so right there's not many ways to ruin a pot of pinto beans....only way I can think of is to let them go dry of water and burn them...of I have done that. Your pot of beans sure looked good. I may have to try this recipe. Trish

Happy Belated Mothers Day BJ! I'm sure you had special celebrations with your dear family:>) I've never tried jalapenos in beans but they sound great! Love the decorating photos and I'm praying for rain for you. We've had so much rain that we are sodden so I guess we take it for granted. I wish i could send those clouds your way!

Gee whiz, BJ, I think that you and Mr. Sweet should walk around your yard and spit! That'd give it some "free" moisture!

I love those blues!

Happy Blue Monday, BJ.

I hope you had a great Mother's Day, BJ. I am praying for rain for you. So hard to garden without rain, no matter how much you water.
You can never let a good ham bone go to waste!

LV said...

We are in the same boat here. If we do not get more rain, we probably will have very strict watering. The hard work and time spent in your yard paid off. Everything looks nice. Wish I had a big bowl of "pinto beans", cornbread and onion.

The beans sound so good. I have never added the peppers before and think I will the next time I make them. I hope you are having a wonderful day BJ!
